What's Inside?

  • Marvel Studios is reportedly considering moving Avengers: Doomsday release date to December 11 to avoid direct box office clash competition.
  • The shift could secure one week of exclusive IMAX screenings before Dune 3 takes over premium screens globally worldwide.
  • Industry insider John Campea confirms discussions are ongoing, though Marvel has not officially announced any change to current plans.

Even in a year packed with major theatrical releases, one film continues to dominate the conversation. Avengers: Doomsday has quietly built a level of anticipation that few modern blockbusters can match. As Marvel Studios prepares its first Avengers outing since Avengers: Endgame, expectations are sky-high. The film promises a massive ensemble, the return of Robert Downey Jr. in a surprising new role, and a pivotal step toward the Multiverse Saga’s conclusion. But now, just as excitement peaks, industry chatter suggests Marvel could be rethinking its release strategy, potentially reshaping one of 2026’s biggest box office showdowns.

Avengers: Doomsday Release Date Shift Could Change Box Office Dynamics

Marvel originally positioned Avengers: Doomsday as a December 18, 2026 release, leaning into the lucrative holiday window. It is a strategy that worked wonders for Spider-Man: No Way Home, which turned a December debut into a near $2 billion global haul. Yet this time, the landscape looks more crowded and more complicated.

The most immediate concern is Dune: Part Three, directed by Denis Villeneuve, which currently shares the same release date. Fans have already coined the clash “Dunesday,” hinting at a rare head-to-head between two cinematic giants. Beyond fan excitement, the overlap raises real logistical challenges, especially around premium formats like IMAX, where screen availability can significantly impact box office returns.

Industry insider John Campea recently shed light on the situation, pointing to shifting dynamics within the release calendar. A key development came when Sony moved its upcoming Jumanji sequel, starring Dwayne Johnson, from December 11 to December 25. That seemingly small change may have opened a strategic window for Marvel to reconsider its own positioning.

According to Campea, the IMAX factor could be the deciding piece of the puzzle. He explained, “Dune 3 was getting all the IMAX screens. Avengers: Doomsday was not going to get any IMAX screens. Dune 3 secured a three-week exclusive run on IMAX. So, in my best Soup Nazi voice, no IMAX for you when it comes to Avengers: Doomsday.”

That limitation is no small issue. For a spectacle-driven franchise like the MCU, IMAX screens are not just a bonus, they are a revenue engine. Missing out during opening week could mean leaving millions on the table.

A possible solution, however, is already being discussed. Campea noted, “Maybe perhaps Avengers Doomsday may move off the December 18th date and move ahead a week to get to come out a week earlier, and for one week get those delicious IMAX. Then it would have a week to it all to itself before Dune 3 takes them over on December 18th.”

Behind the scenes, these conversations appear to be exploratory rather than definitive. Campea revealed, “I send out these feelers all the time.” The response he received suggested that “the very non-committal discussions have taken place.” He summed it up simply: “Bottom line is we could see Avengers Doomsday moving off that December 18th date with Dune 3 and moving up a week.”

For Marvel, the logic is straightforward. A December 11 release would preserve the holiday corridor while offering a clear runway, at least briefly, before competition intensifies. It would also secure a valuable IMAX window, giving the film a stronger launch.

Nothing has been confirmed yet, and officially, Avengers: Doomsday remains locked to its December 18 date. Still, the mere possibility of a shift highlights how carefully studios are navigating an increasingly competitive theatrical landscape. When stakes are this high, even a single week can make all the difference.
