What's Inside?

  • Aaron Pierre will reprise John Stewart from Lanterns in Superman: Man of Tomorrow.
  • James Gunn returns as writer and director of the DC sequel.
  • The film reunites David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult against Brainiac.

The expanding DC Universe continues to link its films and television stories more closely, and a new casting development signals how that vision is taking shape. Actor Aaron Pierre, who will soon debut as Green Lantern John Stewart in the HBO series Lanterns, has secured a role in the upcoming Superman sequel Superman: Man of Tomorrow.

The announcement ties the television side of the DCU directly to its cinematic future. Directed and written by James Gunn, the film will reunite familiar characters while expanding the universe with new connections. Production is scheduled to begin in Atlanta this summer, with the film set for a theatrical release in 2027.

The arrival of Aaron Pierre in Man of Tomorrow marks another step in DC Studios’ effort to build a unified narrative across platforms. Pierre will appear as John Stewart, the Green Lantern, whom he first brings to life in the upcoming HBO series Lanterns. His casting places a major DC hero inside the story that continues the journey of Superman following the events of the 2025 film Superman.

Pierre’s involvement underlines the creative direction James Gunn has described for the DCU. The universe aims to allow characters to move naturally between television and film without feeling disconnected. In Lanterns, Stewart is introduced as one half of a Green Lantern investigation. The series follows “two intergalactic cops,” one a seasoned legend and the other still learning the ropes, who become “drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

That premise places Stewart in a grounded mystery before his journey widens into the larger DC narrative. His arrival in Man of Tomorrow also fits the film’s cosmic direction. Stewart belongs to the Green Lantern Corps, the interstellar peacekeeping force that patrols sectors of space. With Superman facing a technologically advanced alien adversary in the sequel, the presence of a Green Lantern feels like a logical extension of the story’s scale.

The film reunites much of the previous cast. David Corenswet returns as Superman, while Nicholas Hoult once again portrays Lex Luthor. The pair must confront a new threat in the form of Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger. Other returning cast members include Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher. The ensemble also features Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl and Maria Gabriela de Faria as The Engineer.

James Gunn also offered fans a glimpse of the film’s production preparations. The director recently shared images from a familiar Metropolis setting while scouting locations for the sequel. The photos revealed the Daily Planet newsroom, the iconic workplace of Clark Kent and one of the central settings in Superman stories.

Gunn captioned the images with the words, “Back home at the Daily Planet for a tech scout” and “It will look like itself soon enough!” The update confirmed that early production work has begun as the team prepares for filming in Georgia.

The Daily Planet set previously came to life when production transformed Terminal Station in Macon into the bustling newsroom. Returning to that location suggests the sequel will continue exploring the journalistic side of Clark Kent’s life alongside its larger superhero conflict.

Superman: Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on July 9, 2027.
