Robert Downey Jr is now showing what he is capable of beyond his protective Iron Man suit that has saved his career while lifting Marvel Studios to the position where it is today. Right after he departed from his glorious MCU tenure as the titular hero Tony Stark, the actor went on to claim his first Oscar appearing in Christopher Nolan’s 2023 blockbuster Oppenheimer. Now, he surprised fans with his completely wild look in the upcoming Max show The Sympathizer.

As the trailer of The Sympathizer shows Robert Downey Jr’s credit four times, it is fair to assume that his role in the show would be of immense importance. Based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer-winning novel, the HBO limited series follows an enthralling espionage drama starring Cowboy Bebop star Hoa Xuande in the lead.
But Robert Downey Jr. has caught the utmost attention with his insane transformation for the role in the show. His character is intriguing as he would be a face-shifting into four avatars. Brace yourself, here’s the official synopsis of the show:
“Near the end of the Vietnam War, a plant who was embedded in the South Vietnam army flees to the United States and takes up residence in a refugee community, where he continues to secretly spy and report back to the Viet Cong.”
Fans got a taste of what the actor could cook after the release of the trailer of the show. But it was not the only time he had pulled something like that to create a jaw-dropping splash among fans. His roles in the Sherlock Holmes franchise and Chaplin where he played legendary English comic actor and filmmaker Charlie Chaplin, earned him an Oscar nod have been fascinating. But appearing as Kirk Lazarus in Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder still upholds Downey’s one of the best works so far accolade. Of course, he secured another Oscar nomination in this role where he was almost unrecognizable.

Stiller’s 2008 war comedy Tropic Thunder has to be one of the greatest comedy movies ever produced. Many fans and critics claim that the movie was far ahead of its time with its inherent ability to be relevant even today, it feels fresh. Of course, Downey stole the show but the movie is also packed with an astounding cast, Stiller, Jack Black, Steve Coogan, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Brandon T. Jackson, Bill Hader, and Nick Nolte. Also, Matthew McConaughey and Tom Cruise’s (he was also almost unrecognizable) brief appearances made an impact on the comic appeal of the movie.

There is no doubt that the Avengers star will do his cinematic magic again in the forthcoming Max show. The show also stars Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Kieu Chinh, and Sandra Oh. The A24 show for Max will hit the streamer on 14 April with the first episode.
