Showtime’s Dexter has been one of the most popular shows on the network. The series starring Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan is a treat for every crime thriller or slasher fan as the primary narrative of the show revolves around the dual life of Dexter who works as a forensic technician for the police department and utilizes his free time for his crime of passion— murdering those who deserves it.

Dexter is a freakshow, there would be very little argument about that. But beyond the purview of the murder and vigilante act of Dexter Morgan, the series evolves with the inherent thrill progressing into the later seasons. It almost has everything, family drama, friendship dynamics, and of course, the series unapologetically explores the horror and the human psyche.

Retribution apart, Dexter is more fun as the title character tries to cope with his life— the dual nature of it requires him to keep almost everything to himself including destroying the evidence of his crimes and keeping his personality intact despite the immense tensions his acts bring to his plate.

Dexter spawned for 8 seasons with 96 episodes. The Showtime crime thriller debuted on the network on October 1, 2006, and has been a fan-favorite since, primarily for the humor and the inherent act of a serial killer. You would feel for Dexter, laugh at his eccentricities as he tries to fit in the landscape and your heart will definitely race as he attempts to obliterate every potential threat to his vigilante serial killer life.

The series is supported well by the supporting cast which includes, Jennifer Carpenter as Dexter’s adoptive sister and co-worker;  Lauren Vélez as Lieutenant who was later promoted to  Captain, María LaGuerta; David Zayas as Detective Sergeant later Angel Batista, later promoted to Lieutenant; and co.

Why Dexter Is So Good To Watch?

Dexter ended in 2013 but the narrative is not outdated, like any evergreen show including Lost (forget the ending) or Breaking Bad, Dexter has its prowess to remain fresh even today. So, why Dexter is so good to watch? One simple answer would not do justice to the question but specifically, the prowess of the narrative and character development would be the unique selling point. The series has landed on Netflix recently and you should definitely watch the show if you haven’t already, also, Dexter would be a good rewatch.

Despite having eight seasons, the show managed to stay relevant and engaging, at least the first five seasons anyway. Undoubtedly, the first five seasons of the show were extensive fun.

The show was slightly derailed in the latter three seasons but never shied away from the thematic essence of the narrative, there were not boring but compared to the previous seasons, qualitywise fell behind by a small margin. Still, the character arc and the stories in the later seasons would not divert your attention, you’ll just be aware of most of what he might do but not always.

The religious killing touch was a plus as well. Obviously, many shows have their downfall but Dexter by any means attempted to keep the essence of it afloat albeit many fans believe that the ending of the show was not satisfactory.

Further, the twists and turns complemented by the engrossing suspense made the show a first-class television series with the ranks of The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and even Mr. Robot. Showtime revived Dexter in 2021 in another solo series Dexter: New Blood which had 10 episodes.

Stream Dexter now on Netflix.
