It has been half a decade since Jim Parsons made his final appearance as Sheldon Cooper on screen in The Big Bang Theory. The actor later served as a narrator continuing his character in the prequel of the CBS show, Young Sheldon starring Iain Armitage as the younger version of the eccentric character. Now, as Young Sheldon ends with its seventh season, Parsons and his The Big Bang Theory co-star, Mayim Bialik are set to reprise their roles in Young Sheldon. But for Armitage, it was definitely a surreal feeling.
Iain Armitage Explained Seeing Jim Parsons Respring His The Big Bang Theory Role
While fans are excited to see Sheldon Cooper and his on-screen wife Amy again on screen, the Young Sheldon star, Iain Armitage feels it is surreal and weird but cool at the same time. “It was incredible,” Armitage told Variety. Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik reprising their roles “felt like a reunion” for Armitage and he is certainly excited “getting to see them back together.”
The 15-year-old further reflected on the chemistry of the on-screen couple, “They know each other so well and act so well together,” the actor said. “They knew each other’s cues, which was wonderful to see. I think Mister Jim and Miss Mayim both quite enjoyed it, so that’s nice,” he added.
But seeing them in his show “was definitely surreal.” He added, “I think it was weird and cool and interesting. He said that in a good way, he felt like a guest on our set. I was happy that it didn’t feel too weird or out of the ordinary for him. That’s all I can ask for.”
Certainly, the series finale is going to be a banger and the show will end on a good note. The sitcom has lived the legacy of its predecessor. Despite ending while it was at its peak, the show delivered some incredible moments for The Big Bang Theory universe providing an acute backstory of Sheldon Cooper— the genius fictional scientist who went on to win a Nobel with his wife Amy.
Jim Parsons Was A Sheldon Cooper Guide For Iain Armitage
It can never be easy to play a version of a character who has already been established and lived the glory of success. The Big Bang Theory is definitely one of the greatest sitcoms of recent times. One of the primary characters of the show Sheldon Cooper— a narcissistic scientist, ever dependent on others to function in his daily and social life while being ungrateful most of the time— was played with astonishing amusement by Parsons. It was Parsons’ prowess to elevate the essence of the character but recreating a younger version of him was not so easy on Armitage.
Armitage recalled that Parsons was a guiding light for him to shape the character her played in Young Sheldon. He remembers most of it, “just teaching me how to do the accent and the way Sheldon looks at the world,” he told Variety in the same interview.
Saying that “Sheldon seeks order and has a hard time with social interaction, how it can sort of be disordered. For Sheldon, as incredible and genius as he is, it doesn’t come that easy for him. He can do all this wonderful stuff and he’s got such an incredible brain, but some sentiments for him can be completely alien. It is pretty fascinating and an interesting juxtaposition for both a character and a person.”
It was a valuable lesson as the eccentricity of the character was far from being simple. Armitage also did a great job playing Sheldon Cooper harnessing the essence of him to pour more depth into the fan-favorite character.
6 seasons of Young Sheldon are streaming on Max and Netflix. The Big Bang Theory is available to stream on Max.
