What's Inside?

  • The Dealer follows a gifted casino dealer forced back into illegal gambling after a housing scam shatters her wedding plans.
  • Jung So-min leads a powerhouse cast, joined by Ryoo Seung-bum and Lee Soo-hyuk in morally complex roles.
  • Produced by Hwang Dong-hyuk’s Firstman Studio, the series blends crime, psychology, and high-risk gaming tension.

Netflix is doubling down on Korean storytelling power, and its next big bet is already in motion. Production is officially underway on The Dealer, a Korean casino crime drama produced by Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk. The project signals Hwang’s first major move after closing the chapter on his global phenomenon, and expectations are understandably high. With a strong female lead, a morally complex world, and a creative team drawn from some of Korea’s most respected film projects, The Dealer positions itself as a tense character-driven series rooted in risk, survival, and choice.

Netflix has confirmed that The Dealer is a “high-stakes casino crime drama,” a description that hints at both danger and psychological depth. The story follows Geonhwa, a talented casino dealer whose carefully rebuilt life begins to collapse just as she prepares for marriage. A housing fraud scheme pulls the rug out from under her future and forces her back into a world she once escaped. Illegal gambling, hidden alliances, and brutal power games shape the environment she must now face.

What sets the series apart is Geonhwa’s internal conflict. She is not simply reacting to events. She carries long-suppressed abilities that give her an extraordinary advantage at the tables. These powers come at a cost. Using them means stepping deeper into a treacherous space where trust is rare and consequences are permanent. As the pressure mounts, Geonhwa must decide how far she is willing to go to reclaim control over her life. The screenplay is penned by Ohnooy and Lee Tae-young, who build tension through personal stakes rather than spectacle alone.

Jung So-min leads the series as Geonhwa, marking a sharp turn from her earlier roles in Love Reset and Alchemy of Souls. Netflix describes the role as a departure, and the character demands emotional restraint as much as intensity. Ryoo Seung-bum stars as Hwang Chisu, a financially desperate gambler surviving one risky bet at a time. His connection to Geonhwa pulls both characters into a scheme where luck is never guaranteed.

Lee Soo-hyuk adds unpredictability as Jo Jun, a formidable casino rival with keen instincts and an unreadable presence. Ryu Kyung-soo rounds out the central cast as Choi Wooseung, Geonhwa’s fiancé. At home, he appears gentle and dependable. In his professional life as a detective, he reveals a determined edge that could shift the balance of power.

Behind the camera, The Dealer marks the series directorial debut of acclaimed cinematographer Choi Young-hwan. His past work on films like Smugglers, Veteran, Tazza: The High Rollers, and The Thieves is known for sharp visuals that serve the story. Hwang Dong-hyuk joins as producer through Firstman Studio, the company behind Squid Game. While Netflix remains quiet about any future expansions of that universe, global audiences can now place their bets on The Dealer, a series built on skill, consequence, and the price of taking risks.
