HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon has made a stunning buzz with a similar level of intensity. In some way, there are some connections between the show to its sequel, and season 2, episode 2 which was recently dropped on Max, revealed a stunning connection of one scene to Game of Thrones’ Sansa Stark played by Sophie Turner.
House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 2 Has A Connection To Sansa Stark
House of the Dragon certainly has twists and turns in almost every step of the way following its sequel in regards to the stylistic aspects of the narrative. Now, in the latest episode of the HBO hit show, fans got to see one of the most fascinating sequences in the series— the twin fight sequence of Ser Arryk Cargyll and Ser Erryk Cargyll.
The brother versus brother scene is based on the intricate characters duo played by real twins, Luke and Elliott Tittensor. However, despite the relation of the blood, their personalities have propelled them to stand for two opposing sides— Greens and Blacks. Backstory aside, based on George RR Martin’s Fire and Blood, the series, as revealed by the House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal, has a connection to Game of Thrones’ Sansa Stark. “The book depicts a few different versions of that story,” Condal said of adapting the twin fight sequence during his recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter.
“I was always fascinated by the Cargyll twins story because that was a story that Sansa Stark romanticized — going back to the Song of Ice and Fire books,” the showrunner explained the Sansa Stark connection. “And, of course, Sansa has this very Sansa-like romantic vision of what that fight was like and how they dueled for hours as though it was the duel from The Princess Bride. But the real thing would be much more brutal and gritty,” he added.
Ryan Condal Explains The Iconic Duel Fight Scene
Condal revealed that it took a lot of discussion to come up with the perfect version of the fight scene that made it to the screen. “We obviously spent a lot of time debating how that fight would play out,” he told Variety. “It’s very different the way all the disagreeing narrators lay out that particular historical event in the book. So we’re just trying to find one that felt true to the two characters,” he added.
The spark of the civil war has already separated the brothers as they have sworn oaths to protect the Royal Family but as they have turned against each other, the tragedy of the brothers continues to grow.
But as for the fight sequence is concerned, the showrunner and the team wanted to try to “find the central line through it,” Condal told THR. “There’s a version where they’re cursing each other’s names and calling each other ‘traitor’ and that just didn’t feel like the characters we’d set up. We have these two people who found themselves on different sides of this conflict and not knowing what to do with this oath,” he added.
For Condal, the emotional aspect of the sequence mattered most, “I think that makes it more of a tragedy when you see these two brothers trying to hold to their oath but find themselves in literal mortal combat against each other in order to uphold it,” he added.
Of course, the sequence was perfect for the narrative and had the needed gravity of emotions but it was a tragedy that in the literal sense, haunting to the core.
