Justin Timberlake shared that the diagnosis helped him make sense of the intense nerve pain, overwhelming fatigue, and sickness he had been enduring on stage. “Among other things, I’ve been battling some health issues, and was diagnosed with Lyme disease, which I don’t say so you feel bad for me — but to shed some light on what I’ve been up against behind the scenes,” he wrote.

While rumors had swirled online about his waning energy and muted performances during the latter part of his tour, fans were unaware of the chronic illness he was managing backstage. “Not only did I prove my mental tenacity to myself,” Timberlake noted, “but I now have so many special moments with all of you that I will never forget.”
The singer also admitted his initial hesitation to go public with the diagnosis, attributing it to how he was raised. “I was reluctant to talk about this because I was always raised to keep something like this to yourself,” he said. “But I am trying to be more transparent about my struggles so that they aren’t misinterpreted.”
What Is Lyme Disease?
Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness caused by Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria. Transmitted through the bite of infected ticks—typically found in wooded or grassy areas—Lyme can cause a slew of debilitating symptoms. Early signs often include fatigue, joint pain, and flu-like symptoms, accompanied by a distinctive bullseye-shaped rash at the bite site.
According to the Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins experts, the infection may later result in nerve damage, facial paralysis, or cognitive dysfunction if left untreated. “The rash is the distinguishing characteristic,” explained Dr. John Aucott, “but the rest of the symptoms don’t distinguish Lyme disease from other infections.”
If Lyme disease goes untreated, the infection may continue to persist within the body.
