We have known Andrew Garfield for his role in the Spider-Man franchise. In a few months, we will see his chemistry with Florence Pugh in We Live In Time. But there was one oscar-winning movie that has a separate fanbase and it is The Social Network. As the sequel for this movie is under development, fans have this query– will we see Andrew Garfield reprising his role as Brazilian billionaire and entrepreneur Eduardo Saverin? The actor in a recent interview weighs in on the topic.

Andrew Garfield has expressed his willingness to revisit the role of Eduardo Saverin in a potential sequel to The Social Network. However, Garfield himself believes his character may not fit into the new narrative being developed. He shared his thoughts during an appearance on Esquire’s Explain This Video Series, where he voiced his excitement about Aaron Sorkin’s involvement but remained uncertain about his own return. Garfield emphasized, “I think anything that [writer] Aaron [Sorkin] does is going to be really, really powerful and interesting, and if he’s feeling drawn to a subject, you know it’s got some juice in it.” Despite his enthusiasm, the actor added, “I don’t imagine I’d be part of it because I think Eduardo is just living off his billions in Singapore.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed by Aaron Sorkin himself that a sequel to The Social Network is indeed in development. In an episode of The Town podcast, Sorkin revealed that he is actively working on a follow-up to the original story. However, the screenwriter made it clear that this new film would be more of a “spiritual successor” rather than a direct sequel, as he believes there have been many “dramatic” developments surrounding Facebook that warrant fresh exploration. Sorkin has been eager to move forward with this project since 2019, citing how much the world of Facebook has evolved since its inception.

The Social Network, released in 2010, is based on Ben Mezrich’s 2009 book The Accidental Billionaires. The film gives us a deep dive into the creation of Facebook and the legal battles that surrounded it. The story primarily focuses on Mark Zuckerberg, played by Jesse Eisenberg, portraying him as a brilliant but socially inept Harvard student driven by the desire to prove himself following a breakup.

Aaron Sorkin’s screenplay for The Social Network, directed by David Fincher, captured the gritty reality behind the rise of one of the most transformative platforms in history. Contrary to popular belief, the origins of social media were far from the sleek, corporate structure it would eventually become. As portrayed in the film, the entire movement was rooted in a personal grudge. After Mark Zuckerberg was dumped by his girlfriend, a frustrated blog post set off a chain of events that led to the birth of what is now an omnipresent social media giant.

Sorkin’s screenplay doesn’t shy away from showcasing the flawed nature of Facebook’s founders, and in a somewhat poetic structure, the film begins and ends with Zuckerberg isolated—alone with his creation. The movie cleverly tackles the ethical dilemmas tied to Facebook’s creation while also building complex, engaging characters. Both Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Eduardo Saverin and Jesse Eisenberg’s take on Zuckerberg provide intense performances that elevate the film. Given the impact of The Social Network, any potential sequel will undoubtedly face high expectations to match the original’s legacy.

Although Garfield’s return for a sequel to The Social Network remains uncertain, the actor recently shared his willingness to reprise his role as Spider-Man under the right conditions. He said, “For sure, I would 100 percent come back if it was the right thing, if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into.” His love for the character, and the joy it brings, is clearly reflected in his words: “If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m joyful in return.

The Social Network is streaming on Max.
