To make a franchise out of one movie with the subsequent features is not an easy task. Of course not, it’s all about convincing the audience to come again to experience the same things, but with a different approach and tone. Not many franchises can deal with this, but Bad Boys did and people are demanding more of it as they just loved Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s pair. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer also recently in an interview discussed a potential fifth movie. Previously the lead actor duo also commented regarding its future. If made, what could it be all about?
What Did The Bad Boys 4 Producer Say About A Potential Fifth Movie?
Recently, Bad Boys producer Jerry Bruckheimer sat down with Deadline to discuss various projects and one of them was obviously the future of the Bad Boys franchise. On being asked if a fifth Bad Boys movie is coming or not, the producer said that it depends on how this fourth gets responses.
Deadline asked Bruckheimer if the development is already in process, to which he replied:
“We’ve had discussions but we want to see how this one did at the box office, and I’m sure we’ll have conversations this week.”
Bad Boys: Ride or Die debuted with $56 million from 3,885 theaters in its domestic market. The film also opened at the global box office with $48.6 million, bringing its worldwide tally to $104.6 million, per Variety.
Not only, Bruckheimer, but the lead stars and the successful duo of Smith and Lawrence also hinted at yet another sequel. But there is one strict condition they have set for that to happen. They will not make a sequel just for the sake of making it. But, the plot has to be significant and must meet audiences’ expectations.
Martin Lawrence admitted they will “have to see” regarding a possible Bad Boys 5 movie, and while he’ll “never say never”, it also “has to make sense“.
“If the fans ask for it, you know we could be back,” he added.
What Could A Fifth Bad Boys Movie Be About?
We can expect that the fifth Bad Boys movie will rely on younger actors as Will Smith said that the “younger actors are going to need to do more of the stunts, that’s for sure.” (Entertainment Weekly)
Echoing Smith, Lawrence also said:
“We always have so much fun making these movies… Will and I have a great time working together, so as long as the fans want it and the demand is there, I’ll keep trying to give them what they want.”
Also, the actors know that they aging. So it’s not going to be easy to go and have a fight. “We might have one more in us before we hand it off,” the King Richards star told The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere.
“The back ain’t went out quite yet, so before we do that — we ain’t going to pass it off just yet,” said Lawrence
The future for Mike and Marcus after Ride or Die is more intricate than it appears. Their futures are left ambiguous, as the film concludes without a dramatic cliffhanger or a post-credit scene.
By the end of the film, corrupt District Attorney Lockwood and his accomplice, former special ops soldier James McGrath, are apprehended by the duo, thus clearing their names. Despite this, it remains uncertain whether Mike and Marcus will continue as partners or decide to take a break from their police duties.
The film does offer a glimmer of hope for a continued partnership. After the charges are dropped, a lighthearted barbecue scene sees Mike and Marcus even allowing their tech expert Reggie to take charge of the grill – a sign of his newfound respect after showcasing his impressive military skills during a crucial fight.
Despite the lack of a definitive conclusion, one thing remains clear – the Bad Boys franchise continues to resonate with audiences. Enthusiasm for Michael Mann’s movies hasn’t waned, as box office numbers continue to climb. This suggests that fans are still eager to see Mike and Marcus in action.
Whether a fifth installment comes out or not, Bad Boys: Ride or Die undoubtedly carried forward the legacy of the original series, leaving fans clamoring for more such adventures from Miami’s most reckless detectives.
Bad Boys: Ride or Die is running in theaters.
