The Crow has been one of the highly anticipated movies of 2024 primarily for the curiosity involved, considering the original movie was a stunning hit and has been a cult classic. Now, nearly 28 years later, Rupert Sanders brought back the narrative to the OG screen for fans with Bill Skarsgard playing The Crow. However, as the movie made its theatrical debut, it has been bombarded with negative reviews which may hamper the film’s theatrical run.
The Crow Has Not Been Certified Fresh At Rotten Tomatoes
Despite high anticipation of The Crow, fans were very skeptical of the reboot as fans wanted the movie to be left alone with Brandon Lee’s legacy who tragically passed away on set. The movie that was released in 1994 has since gained a huge fan following. However, the latest reboot which made its theatrical debut on 23 August, is seemingly having a bumpy road as critics’ consensus has not been favorable to Rupert Sanders-directed movie.
As of writing the piece, The Crow is standing at a 24% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 34 reviews.
Avi Offer from NYC Movie Guru called the movie “forgettable, disjointed and undercooked” despite being “visually stylish” while Bill Skarsgard “oozes with charisma.” with his role.
Inverse critic Lyvie Scott said, “What starts as a compelling love story ends up choked by a gory, gruesome tale of revenge: there are glimmers of brilliance here and there, but there’s not always room for the dark to mingle with the light.”

William Bibbiani from TheWrap is rather critical of the plot of the movie, “When you stifle the emotional simplicity of a story like The Crow to emphasize the plot, the plot had better make sense. And it doesn’t. It’s got perplexing rules and a vague chronology and nothing seems like it matters anymore.”
Mashable critic Kristy Puchko dubbed the movie as “Ugly, incoherent, and ultimately cynical, The Crow evokes the words of wisdom from another horror movie about resurrected corpses on a rampage: Sometimes dead is better.”
Slashfilm’s Witney Seibold has seemingly found the fatal flaws of the movie blaming the sloppy editing, “Thanks to sloppy editing and a general lack of basic storytelling acumen, events speed past without much explanation, emotional resonance, or, in some scenes, basic communication.”
Still, not all reviews are negative, some critics have blessed the movie for crafting new tonality adding to the new depth of the narrative but still, it is too far away from certified fresh.
Bill Skarsgard Revealed Why New The Crow Movie Is Different From The Original
The very tonality of the new The Crow movie is very different from the original. While the OG movie had a brilliant classy touch, Skarsgard’s movie with FKA twigs, is set in the modern landscape. In a chat with Entertainment Tonight, Skarsgard shared the reason why the two movies are different despite both following James O’Barr’s comic book series of the same name.
“It all started for me with having a conversation with Rupert even before there was a script around and he spoke about his vision and what he wanted to do with this kind of reimagining if you will, or readaptation of the graphic and then was Rupert’s vision and me going okay so who’s this character in the new world of it he’s changed quite a lot from the original and I always think that that’s a smart way to go,” the actor said.
The actor further added that there’s no point in “remaking something that’s already so iconic. So, for me it didn’t become about like playing The Crow, it became about this movie that we’re trying to do and once we got the structure of the movie and the scripts it’s like okay so these are the confines where the character is going through and then that shapes the character as well.”
The Crow is now showing in theaters.
