Leave the World Behind, a gripping apocalyptic thriller was released on Netflix on October 25, 2023. This film features Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke as a dysfunctional couple whose vacation in the Hamptons is abruptly halted by the onset of a global catastrophe. The disaster begins with a technology outage eerily similar to the recent worldwide chaos caused by a Microsoft outage.
As the situation deteriorates, G.H., portrayed by Mahershala Ali, reveals that the nation is facing a three-stage assault orchestrated by an unidentified adversary, with the ultimate goal of inciting civil war and dismantling American society.
The initial stage of the sinister plan involves crippling the country’s communication and transportation systems through a cyberattack. And now, fans quickly went to X, formerly Twitter to share their thoughts comparing the recent tech outage to the film.

This Netflix’s apocalyptic film left viewers grappling with unanswered questions. The movie’s ambiguous nature sparked theories about the cause of the world’s end, the strange behavior of the deer, and the seemingly out-of-place reference to the sitcom Friends.

In the climax of the movie, which is divided into five parts, a series of unsettling events unfold. Amanda and Clay’s son, Archie, wakes up to the alarming discovery that his teeth are falling out, and their daughter, Rose, goes missing.
GH and Clay seek help from their neighbor Danny, but their efforts are futile as Danny offers no assistance, only warning them to return home.
While GH and Clay are engaged with Danny, Amanda and Ruth embark on a search for Rose but find themselves confronting the chaos outside, marked by explosions over New York and distant gunfire.
Amidst these events, Rose is seen entering an abandoned house she had previously noticed. Inside, she discovers food and drink and eventually finds her way to a safe room.
This safe room, a “doomsday bunker” secretly built by GH’s neighbors, the Thornes, becomes a temporary refuge for Rose. Equipped with essentials such as food, water, beds, and electricity, the bunker provides a sense of security.
Most intriguingly for Rose, the bunker houses a well-stocked DVD library and a TV. She selects the box set for the final season of “Friends” and watches “The Last One” as the movie concludes.
The inclusion of “Friends” might seem odd, but for Esmail, it symbolizes “pure escapism” for Rose. “In moments of crisis when we’ve lost sight of our common humanity, when we feel isolated, we do want to escape to comfort,” he explained to Tudum.
The film’s ending, while potentially frustrating for its lack of clear answers, aligns with the book’s ambiguous nature. However, the movie hints at a possible explanation, inviting viewers to delve deeper into its mysteries.
