It is confirmed that Disney is developing two Pirates of the Caribbean movies, both of which will be rebooted. Sadly, Fan favorite Jack Sparrow actor Johnny Depp will not return as Disney’s decision to cut ties with the actor stands despite producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s wish to bring the actor back to his titular role in a heartbeat.

Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been one of the most successful Disney franchises that have come to be a global pop cultural phenomenon, thanks to Depp who immersed with his role with his immaculate charm. The last movie in the franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was revealed in 2017 and it has been nearly seven years, but several buzz surrounding a new reboot has made fans hope for the revival of the franchise but sadly, Depp’s absence is a knife straight to the heart for many fans.

A Pirates of the Caribbean Movie Is In The Early Development

Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that there will be two versions of the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot. Barbie star Margot Robbie was heavily rumored to be starring in one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, “Two versions,” the legendary producer said of the potential movie. And “we’ll see which script turns out the best.”

However, the producer confirmed that the movie is still in the development process and they are unsure of the movie as of yet. “We don’t know we have to wait till we get the scripts.” Still, Robbie leading the movie would be a nice touch to the new reboot as the actor has proved her capability to perform intricate roles on more than one occasion. While her portrayal of Harley Quinn was one of the most memorable roles for fans she went on to be a box office queen with her 2023 flick Barbie which also earned the actor her third Oscar nomination.

As for Robbie, she was skeptical about the project previously stating that Disney seemingly did not want to move forward with the idea. “We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it,” she told Vanity Fair.

Further, another rumor surrounding a Pirates of the Caribbean movie was on the horizon where Dune: Part Two and The Bikeriders actor Austin Butler was dragged into the rumor claiming the 32-year-old will replace Johnny Depp. However, the actor rejected the claim that was on the horizon saying, “It’s a hard one to touch because they did it so well. I loved what Johnny [Depp] did with that,” (via Entertainment Tonight). Regardless, Pirates of the Caribbean still remain hazy as the movie is seemingly dwindling in development hell.

Margot Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean movie is not the only movie Disney has their eyes locked in the franchise. Jerry Bruckheimer also revealed that another movie in the franchise is in the works which will follow the events of Dead Men Tell No Tales.

“We have a script that’s being written right now,” Bruckheimer ComicBook.com. “Hopefully it’ll come in in a month or so, and it’ll be as good as I think it will be. So let’s hope that Disney likes it and they give us an opportunity to make it,” he added.

In another interview with EW, the producer clarified that both the potential movies are reboots. “We hope to get ’em both made, and I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot one, too,” Bruckheimer told the outlet.

Elsewhere in the interview, the producer also addressed the questions surrounding Depp’s return. “It’s a reboot, but if it was up to me, he would be in it,” he said. “I love him. He’s a good friend. He’s an amazing artist and he’s a unique look. He created Captain Jack. That was not on the page, that was him doing a little Pepé Le Pew and Keith Richards. That was his interpretation of Jack Sparrow.”

As of now, we know that Jeff Nathanson who penned Dead Men Tell No Tales is writing the sixth installment of the movie which will feature a new cast to move the franchise forward.

All Pirates of the Caribbean movies are available to stream on Disney+.
