The first trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux, the musical sequel to Joker starring Oscar winners Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, has been released. The studio revealed the trailer during its studio presentation to exhibitors at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Joaquin Phoenix will reprise his role as Arthur Fleck − also known as The Joker in the movie. Meanwhile, Lady Gaga will debut Harley Quinn’s character in the sequel − referred to as Harleen Quinzen in the sequel.

Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker: Folie à Deux will be a musical which follows the twisted romance between Arthur Fleck / Joker and Harley Quinn.

The much-anticipated film is expected to include 15 numbers, Variety reported, with most of them being covers of pre-existing songs. The trailer features the 1965 song What the World Needs Now Is Love

We never talked about it like that,” said director Phillips. “I like to say it’s a movie where music is an essential element. To me that doesn’t veer to far from the first film.” In the first film, “Arthur has music in him. He has a grace to him.” (Via THR)

Joker: Folie à Deux also stars Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Steve Coogan and Catherine Keener.

That’s right. Everyone is waiting for this musical sequel. Just like its original movie, the new film also carries a R rating for “strong violence, language throughout, some sexuality, and brief full nudity,” per the MPA.

In the beginning of the trailer, Arthur Fleck is seen explaining what music brings to his life and why it is such an important part of his and Harley’s story. “We use music to make us whole … To balance the fractures within ourselves,” Fleck says.

And then we get to listen to the classic tune What the World Needs Now

Joker became the first R-rated film ever to gross over USD$1bn. It earned $1.79 billion at the global box office. The movie scored 11 Oscar nominations including Best Picture, winning for Phoenix’s performance and for Original Score.

Joker: Folie à Deux releases in United States theaters on October 4, 2024, from Warner Bros. Pictures.
