Nearly 36 years later, the classic action movie Top Gun got a sequel as Top Gun: Maverick which earned the legacy of the original movie with a stunning box office number while being the critical darling. Tom Cruise returns as  Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick giving us the ultimate delight of a commercial action-packed entertainer. Now, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has an update on the movie’s third installment alongside a Pirates of the Caribbean project.

Top Gun franchise starring Tom Cruise in the lead as Naval Aviator Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell has retained its glory with the success of the second installment. Fans immediately wondered if there would be another installment to add to the franchise. Previously, Deadline reported that Top Gun 3 was officially in development at Paramount with Top Gun: Maverick co-writer Ehren Kruger penning the draft.

According to the report, Cruise will reunite with Miles Teller and Glen Powell in the third movie with Jerry Bruckheimer and David Ellison being on the producing front. It is unclear if Joe Kosinski will return to helm the project but the director is expected to be involved in the project, perhaps as a producer.

Recently speaking with Entertainment Tonight’s Nischelle Turner at the Los Angeles premiere of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Bruckheimer briefly commented on Top Gun 3 as the reporter asked him about the progress of the movie. “You know we’re still grinding away on it,” Bruckheimer told Turner. “Hopefully we’ll get closer but you know it’s all it’s fun it’s going to if we get it done well we’ll figure out a way,” he added.

The producer added that the movie is about to jump into the next step, “We’re about to get in that stage we have a great idea great story and now it’s time to put it on paper.” Further, he acknowledged that the bar is even higher with this one.

Top Gun: Maverick marvel is still fresh and talk of the town. While the movie is packed with adrenaline-pumping aviation action scenes, the emotional reunion of Val Kilmer’s  Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky with Cruise’s character has made the eyes of fans teary. Also, Maverick’s romance with Jennifer Connelly’s Penelope “Penny” Benjamin was top-notch notch complementing the balance the narrative deserved.

Despite the emotional and action-packed flying success of the movie, the sequel still has a long road ahead as Cruise has been busy with several other projects including his seemingly last installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Dead Reckoning Part II.

In January this year, Cruise signed a deal with Warner Brothers to develop and produce original and franchise films which will keep him busy stopping him from immediately jumping ship to Paramount Pictures again. Also, the 62-year-old has another action movie staled at Universal which will reunite him with Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman.

In March this year, Bruckheimer rather gave a realistic update on Top Gun 3. Speaking with Screen Rant, the producer shared that the scheduling of the movie is still far away from happening anytime soon. “You never know when it’s going to get made because Tom is so busy,” Bruckheimer said. “He’s doing Mission: Impossible right now, he’s got a picture after it. Hopefully, we’ll get a screenplay that he loves, and we’ll be back in the air again.”

Top Gun: Maverick was a box office marvel that also topped the tally of the highest-grossing movie of Cruise’s career earning a stunning $1.49 billion worldwide with a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score.
