Dune director Denis Villeneuve is thinking of going deeper into the world of Arrakis as he keeps writing the screenplay for the much-anticipated next installment. The upcoming threequel in the epic saga promises to be even more emotionally charged, especially with Zendaya’s character, Chani, being the focus. Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two broke box office records, grossing over $685 million globally. But what is more important, it garnered positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, solidifying Dune’s place as a modern cinematic masterpiece. With this momentum, Dune: Messiah is poised to be another groundbreaking film.
Denis Villeneuve Gives Exciting Updates on Dune 3
Director Denis Villeneuve has confirmed he’s currently penning the script for the highly anticipated Dune 3. This next installment will delve into the events of Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah, which takes place twelve years after the conclusion of Dune 2.
While plot details remain tightly under wraps, Villeneuve hinted at a brewing storm within the narrative. He revealed to The New York Times that Chani, played by Zendaya, will be harboring a significant amount of anger towards Paul (Timothee Chalamet) in the upcoming film. “That anger is tremendous,” Villeneuve stated, leaving fans eager to understand the reason behind Chani’s emotional shift.
Although tight-lipped about specifics, Villeneuve reassured fans that he has a clear vision for the film. “I know exactly what to do,” he declared. “There’s a lot of firepower there and I’m very excited about that decision.” This cryptic message has ignited speculation among fans, who are eager to predict the direction of the plot.
While Dune 3 is confirmed, it appears it won’t be Villeneuve’s immediate focus. Reports suggest he’ll be tackling a different project before returning to Arrakis. His next project remains a mystery, but rumors have linked him to a film centered around nuclear war.
Villeneuve has always envisioned Dune as a trilogy. “I always envisioned three movies,” he previously told EW. “This is Dune, and Dune is a huge story. In order to honor it, I think you would need at least three movies.” His ultimate goal is to explore the complete journey of Paul Atreides.
With several projects currently in development, Villeneuve acknowledges the uncertainty of the future. “I have no control over that,” he admitted. However, fans can rest assured that Dune 3 is a priority, with Villeneuve expressing his eagerness to bring the project to life: “That needs to see the light of day quite quickly.”
Denis Villeneuve Is Excited to Reunite With Two actresses Who Motivate Him to Make Dune 3
Denis Villeneuve previously cited two actresses’ names who are one of the reasons he wants to make the third installment in the sci-fi franchise. He mentioned Golden Globe winner Anya Taylor-Joy and Oscar-nominated actress Florence Pugh who were part of Dune: Part Two.
Florence Pugh’s role as Princess Irulan was very small and it is expected that she will get a bigger role in the potential third installment. Anya Taylor-Joy played the adult version of Paul Atreides’ younger sister Alia, and her role was also very brief.
Speaking with EW, Villeneuve spoke about about his experience filming with The Queen’s Gambit star. “I was deeply happy with the fact that Anya accepted this challenge of playing a ghost and a secret,” he said. “I cannot believe that we kept the secret that long. It required so much work to keep that secret. Everybody signed with their blood.“
In an interview with Empire magazine, Villeneuve said that he will make Dune 3 and for that to happen it needs to be real, it needs to be relevant.
