Is Mother Mary Based On True Events?

In his chat with Empire, director David Lowery shared that Taylor Swift played a key role in shaping Mother Mary. He called her Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour one of the finest concert films ever made. The team studied it closely to design large-scale stage moments on a tight budget.

Lowery even broke down songs from the Reputation era, frame by frame. This helped map out visual effects costs for each shot. He said they kept returning to Swift’s work as a guide while building their own stadium scenes.

He also imagined the lead character as a future version of Swift. Anne Hathaway later spoke about the challenge of the role in Vogue. She said the part demanded starting fresh and embracing failure. 

“I had to submit to being a beginner. The humility of that—showing up every day knowing you’re going to suck. And it has to be okay. You’re not ‘bad.’ You’re just a beginner. Getting to that mindset—I had to shed some things that were hard to shed. It was welcome. But it was hard, the way transformational experiences can be hard.” 

For her, the process was tough but rewarding.

Hathaway pushed herself hard to step into a full pop star role for Mother Mary. She trained in both singing and dance before filming began. In early footage, she performs on stage, moving in sync with dancers while singing a track by FKA Twigs.

Her dance prep was intense and nonstop. She worked closely with choreographer Dani Vitale, known for working with Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Halsey. Hathaway said movement shaped the character, so she spent long hours training daily.

The film’s music also brings major names together. Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff helped build the sound. Hathaway found strong inspiration in St. Vincent, whose layered persona guided her approach to the role.
