Elizabeth Olsen has coupled up with Himesh Patel in her latest sci-fi film, The Assessment starring alongside Alicia Vikander. The movie was recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was met with decent reviews. Following the premiere, the cast of the movie with the director Fleur Fortuné explained the movie’s intriguing plot.
Alicia Vikander And Elizabeth Olsen Join Himesh Patel In The Assessment
The movie is set in the near future, where people need government permission to have children. A couple, played by Elizabeth Olsen and Himesh Patel, must go through an evaluation process. The official assessor played by Alicia Vikander will stay with them for a week to decide if they are allowed to have a child.
“I found were so elegantly explored without being very agenda and like message forward but I felt like it was a part of the fabric of how the story showed itself,” Olsen who played Mia in the movie told Deadline. Olsen thought “the potential for the absurdest uh situational humor would have been very fun to explore.” She continued, “I think personally I was trying to find something that pushed me to like an an edge or like a loss of control in a way and in a world where everything is being controlled by the state.”
Speaking of her character, the actor added, “These characters especially Mia the character I play is the one who’s starting to challenge it and think about a different way and a sense of individual freedoms.”
As for Vikander, the movie was a “juicy pot” in the sense that “I knew I was going to get to, you know, in a different way what and then what Elizabeth with maybe is, you know, expressed. I knew I was going to have to push myself and go pretty far, um, for me to give Justice to this role and what she’s doing to this couple. Vikander’s Assessor is on a mission “obviously they’re assessing them for this week um but without giving too much away what really draw me to was when I read it it was very much a mystery trying to figure out who she was and what her intentions.”
The Assessment Is Quite Personal To The Director
The director of the movie Fleur Fortuné had a chat with Variety sharing that the movie was quite close to her personal life. “I think I was in the process myself where I was trying to have kids like for four years and uh, I had to go through IVF lots of test and it was like to a point where it was kind of absurd,” she told the outlet about her debut feature.
“I think that’s what it’s interesting or so it’s like it’s definitely a three because you’re on the edge of your seat like at every moment. You don’t know what going to happen but there’s also like absurd humor, like dark is also a bit of sci-fi and it’s and it’s like quite dramatic at the same time. And I think it’s interesting that nowadays we’re allowed to explore different genre within the same film it makes me more deeper.”
Alongside Olsen, Vikander and Himesh Patel, the movie also stars Minnie Driver, Indira Varma, Charlotte Ritchie, Nicholas Pinnock, Leah Harvey, and Anaya Thorley.
The Assessment premiered at TIFF on Sept. 8 but theatrical release info has been under wraps.
