What's Inside?
- John Cena captures the Intercontinental Championship from Dominik Mysterio, completing his WWE Grand Slam journey in an emotional Boston homecoming.
- Triple H praises Cena as “the greatest of all time,” setting up an impromptu title match that turns tribute into triumph.
- Dominik Mysterio’s arrogance costs him dearly as Cena overcomes dirty tactics, winning the title ahead of his December retirement match.
It was a night that defined both legacy and emotion as John Cena finally achieved the one milestone missing from his legendary WWE career. On the November 10 edition of Monday Night Raw from Boston’s TD Garden, the 17-time World Champion defeated Dominik Mysterio to capture the Intercontinental Championship, officially becoming a Grand Slam Champion. The moment was historic. The win also marked Cena’s final appearance in his hometown before his December retirement.
John Cena’s Emotional Farewell Turns Into a Championship Clash
The night began with WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque stepping into the ring to deliver a heartfelt introduction. “At a time when everyone has an opinion on who the all-time great is… there is only one person at the top of that list,” Levesque said, before calling John Cena “the single greatest asset this business has ever seen” and introducing him as “the greatest of all time.”
Cena walked out to a thunderous ovation from his Boston crowd, clearly moved by the moment. He reflected on his upcoming retirement and his goal to “leave the business better than he found it.” Cena revealed that his final in-ring performance would take place on December 13 at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
But the emotional tribute took a sharp turn when Intercontinental Champion “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio interrupted. The 27-year-old champion, known for his arrogance and defiance, dismissed Cena’s farewell, claiming that he was already better than Cena “in his prime.” With Triple H still in the ring, the disrespect didn’t sit well with anyone, least of all the WWE legend standing across from him.
Cena warned Mysterio, “In any other place or city, I’d give you a chance. Tonight, Cena is invincible! Choose your words carefully.” Triple H seized the moment and made the match official, declaring, “If it’s ok with Cena, Dominik Mysterio will defend the Intercontinental Championship right here and now!”
Dominik Mysterio Falls, John Cena Becomes WWE’s Grand Slam Champion

A classic WWE bout followed, old-school storytelling, emotional stakes, and relentless crowd energy. Mysterio gained early control with his trademark dirty tactics, sending Cena into the steel steps and mocking the Boston crowd. The young champion even attempted to cheat using a steel chair, echoing the infamous “Eddie Guerrero” playbook, but Cena wasn’t fooled.
The match reached a chaotic climax when the referee was knocked down just as Mysterio tapped out to Cena’s STF submission. By the time a second referee ran down, both men were exhausted. Mysterio landed a 619 and followed with a Frog Splash, but Cena rolled through, lifted Mysterio onto his shoulders, and delivered a thunderous Attitude Adjustment for the three-count.

With that victory, John Cena became the 25th Grand Slam Champion in WWE history, a title reserved for superstars who have won the WWE Championship, Intercontinental Championship, United States Championship, and Tag Team Championships. Despite holding 17 world titles, five U.S. titles, and multiple tag team reigns, Cena had never captured the Intercontinental Championship until this night.
“Thank you so much, Boston, because of you, the Champ is here!” Cena told the roaring crowd as fireworks lit up the arena.
Backstage, fellow superstars, including Cody Rhodes and Rey Mysterio, congratulated Cena. The elder Mysterio even joked that his son “still has a good kid” who hopefully learned a valuable lesson. Dominik’s 204-day reign ended dramatically, closing a chapter that mirrored his character’s arrogance and immaturity.
