Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated Comic-Con 2024 panel brought a wave of excitement for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A significant highlight was the introduction of a new, formidable antagonist to the ever-expanding saga.

The studio had managed to keep the casting of a pivotal role under tight wraps, fueling intense speculation among fans. However, the curtains were finally drawn at the grand Hall H event, revealing the enigmatic Giancarlo Esposito as the mastermind behind the villainous Serpent Society. Esposito’s late addition to the cast of Captain America: Brave New World through reshoots had only intensified the mystery surrounding his character.

Esposito expressed his excitement to the fans, describing the experience as “a dream come true.” He shared that fan casting initially brought them together, leading to discussions about his role. There had been much speculation about his character. He stated, “But to be with this cast, especially Anthony Mackie… Can I say it? Wow! I can finally unleash it. I am the King of the Serpent Society. I am Sidewinder!”

Now, who is Sidewinder in the Marvel Comics and what makes him powerful?

In the Marvel universe, the name Sidewinder has been associated with three distinct villains, with Seth Voelker being the most notable bearer of the title. Voelker, initially an economics professor, transitioned into a role as an analyst for the Roxxon Oil Company. Upon discovering Roxxon’s malevolent plans, which surpassed typical corporate malfeasance, he was presented with an offer for enhancement. This offer involved chemically altering his body and providing him with a cloak that enabled teleportation, transforming him into the villain known as Sidewinder.

Over time, Sidewinder’s aspirations outgrew Roxxon, leading him to establish the Serpent Society, a criminal organization composed of individuals with snake-themed abilities. This group included notable members such as Anaconda, Black Mamba, and Diamondback. Sidewinder predominantly served as the leader of the Serpent Society, although he experienced a notable overthrow by Viper before regaining control of the organization.

Eventually, Sidewinder retired from his life of crime after Captain America assisted him in raising funds for his ill daughter. Another Sidewinder, whose name was not revealed, briefly appeared in “Iron Fist” but met his demise during an ill-fated attempt to infiltrate a S.H.I.E.L.D. station. The third incarnation of Sidewinder, Gregory Bryan, emerged in 2004. Much like Voelker, Bryan’s Sidewinder frequently clashed with Captain America and was affiliated with the Serpent Society, although he rarely held the position of leader.

Marvel Comics has a penchant for creating extraordinary villains, and Sidewinder is a prime example. This serpentine antagonist possesses a unique and formidable ability: teleportation. His specially designed cloak allows him to instantaneously travel vast distances, a power described in comic lore as moving “sideways” through space. What’s more, this remarkable garment can also transport an additional person alongside him. To top it off, Sidewinder’s armor provides exceptional protection against physical harm and gunfire.

Seth Voelker, one of the characters to don the Sidewinder mantle, is more than just a brute. Known for his strategic mind, he is often considered the mastermind behind the Serpent Society’s intricate plans. His academic background, surprisingly, plays a crucial role in his villainous pursuits. A degree in economics has proven to be an unexpected asset in his quest for global domination.

The upcoming Marvel blockbuster, Captain America: Brave New World, is gearing up for an epic showdown between Sam Wilson’s Captain America and the infamous Serpent Society. Adding to the excitement, the legendary Giancarlo Esposito is set to make his MCU debut as Sidewinder, a key member of the villainous group. Esposito describes his character as a complex and physically imposing figure, a departure from his usual roles as a cunning, intellectual antagonist.

It is almost certain that the MCU adaptation of Sidewinder will feature some changes from the original comic book version, particularly regarding Esposito’s costume. However, the actor has hinted at additional facets of the role beyond its appearance in Entertainment Weekly.

Esposito shared, “I like it because he’s a complicated guy who didn’t start in a nefarious way. He came to this in a different way, which hopefully will unfold.” He further explained that, unlike his previous roles, which include Gus Fring from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, Stan Edgar from The Boys, Moff Gideon from The Mandalorian, and Lex Luthor from Harley Quinn, Sidewinder differs significantly. “I like Sidewinder because he’s a physical guy,” Esposito elaborated. “He’s got to go toe-to-toe with his physicality and he knows how to use the tools of his trade.”

SUGGESTED: Wild MCU Theory Claims True ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Villain Is Hiding In Plain Sight, Reveals Fate Of President Ross

It remains to be seen how closely Esposito’s portrayal will align with the comic book version of Sidewinder. Current trailers and promotional images for Captain America: Brave New World have yet to showcase Esposito in the traditional Sidewinder costume or reveal his teleportation abilities. It is anticipated that Sidewinder will assume a leadership role within the Serpent Society in the MCU, focusing more on strategy rather than direct confrontation with Captain America.

Directed by Julius Onah, Captain America: Brave New World features Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) dealing with an international crisis. Following an assassination attempt on President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (Harrison Ford) involving brainwashed Super Soldiers, including Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly), Sam uncovers a compromised inner circle and a looming global disaster that he must address.

The film’s cast includes Tim Blake Nelson reprising his role as Samuel Sterns from The Incredible Hulk; Shira Haas as Ruth Bat-Seraph, an ex-Black Widow turned U.S. government official; Xosha Roquemore as a member of Ross’ security team; and Liv Tyler returning as Betty Ross, a character from The Incredible Hulk.

Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters on February 14, 2025.
