Marvel Studios has been quietly laying the groundwork for the X-Men’s long-awaited arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, fans have speculated about how mutants would finally be integrated into the MCU. Now, there’s a major development. Jake Schreier, the filmmaker behind Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, has confirmed he has officially begun work on the highly anticipated X-Men reboot.
Jake Schreier Confirms Work Has Begun On X-Men

Speaking with Empire Magazine, Schreier shared his excitement about leading one of Marvel’s most important projects yet. “I can’t say anything about it, but we’ve started work on X-Men, and that’s obviously very, very exciting,” he revealed. While details remain under lock and key, his involvement signals a pivotal step forward for the long-anticipated mutant saga.
Schreier’s first Marvel outing, Thunderbolts*, gave him a crash course in handling an ensemble-driven blockbuster, an experience that will serve him well with the X-Men, who carry decades of complex history and fan expectations. Reflecting on the lessons he learned, he explained—
“There are so many things that I didn’t know about before I started [Thunderbolts]. The biggest learning curve for me was the proportion of the action to the more emotional, character-driven scenes, and how, even though it’s more shooting days than I’ve ever had, they get eaten up quite quickly by the action stuff. By the time we got to the end of it, it felt like, ‘Oh, now I feel like we get how to do this a little bit better.’”
The director recalled filming massive set pieces on Thunderbolts*, calling the experience surreal: “Look, who gets to do that? [On Thunderbolts] we’re in the middle of nowhere in Utah, in a gorgeous location, owning a road, and filming in 100-degree heat, or finding yourself on the second-tallest building in the world. These are very special experiences.”
Why Jake Schreier Is the Right Fit for Marvel’s X-Men?

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has praised Schreier’s ability to connect with audiences, especially younger viewers. “Jake’s an incredibly smart guy, and he’s an incredibly talented filmmaker. We had a great experience with him on Thunderbolts*,” Feige said. He added that Schreier’s approach to character interactions will be “much more important for X-Men. Because X-Men, as it was in the comics, will be a very youth-oriented, focused and cast movie.”
Schreier himself sees the material as rich with complexity. In a separate interview, he noted that the X-Men are “inherently interesting and complex material” because of their constant struggle with identity and acceptance.
Meanwhile, Marvel is preparing fans for the mutants’ grand return with Avengers: Doomsday, releasing December 18, 2026. Legendary stars such as Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), and James Marsden (Cyclops) are set to reprise their iconic roles before a younger generation of mutants takes center stage in Schreier’s film. Though the X-Men reboot does not yet have an official release date, most industry reports suggest it will arrive after Avengers: Secret Wars, likely in 2028 or beyond.
