Sebastian Stan is set to reprise his MCU role as Bucky Barnes in Marvel Cinematic Universe’s highly anticipated movie Thunderbolts* alongside his fellow misfits. The actor who last appeared in 2021’s Disney Plus series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier reprising the character after his last big screen appearance in the 2019 MCU opus Avengers: Endgame, recently shared how Bucky Barnes made room in the upcoming movie.
Sebastian Stan Reflects On His MCU Character Bucky Barnes’ Appearance In Thunderbolts*
Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes first appeared in MCU’s Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011 alongside Chris Evan’s Steve Rogers/ Captain America. While they were best of friends, Barnes was found by Hydra who experimented on him and turned him into the Winter Soldier, a ruthless assassin. Stan revealed that he was not sure where his character would end up after Avengers: Endgame.
“It’s always been fun for me to come back to him after all these years because you’re growing as a person, and then the character ends up growing,” Stan told GamesRadar+ during the press junket of Aaron Schimberg-directed A24 movie, A Different Man.
“I never would have thought we would have ended up where we have with him, but it’s a very interesting group of characters, and they all bring out different sides of themselves. I think [Bucky] finds himself way more suited to them than initially maybe he wants to admit, but he’s always an evolving character, and that’s what I love about him. It’s always trying to find another way of expressing. I think it’ll be fun. I think people will be excited for the movie,” stan added.
Stan’s Bucky Barnes will join Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, David Harbour’s Alexei Shostakov/ Red Guardian, and John Walker/ U.S. Agent played by Wyatt Russell, Ava Starr/ Ghost played by Hannah John-Kamen, Olga Kurylenko’s Antonia Dreykov/ Taskmaster alongside Lewis Pullman as Bob/ Sentry which will mark the debut of the powerful character.
Sebastian Stan Shared Bucky Barnes’ Relationship With Thunderbolts* Misfits
It is no secret that Thunderbolts* will feature misfit characters in the MCU. The team of antiheroes will go on a mission but their union will not be as easy as the highly regarded heroes in the superhero brand. Stan alongside his co-stars and director of the movie, Jake Schreier previously spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the movie during the 2024 Comic-Con International: San Diego. Here’s what Stan said about the relationship of the eccentric character:
“Well you know, it’s, uh any toxic relationship brings out more fun things. Even from the past. Well, I think, he sort of is surprised by how much of, you know, kinship he feels with everyone, so it’s an odd pairing but it’s also really nice for him as a character. I think in terms of the direction that we’re taking him so it’s exciting.”

Marvel Entertainment has already dropped a three-and-a-half-minute trailer of the movie unveiling the first look and the basic premise of the movie giving fans food for thought about what to expect in the theaters.
Thunderbolts* is scheduled for a May 2nd, 2025 release.
