Amid leaks and trailer/teaser drops, one important Deadpool 2 character seemed to be missing from the scene. When Josh Brolin’s Cable appeared in Deadpool 2, fans hailed the character. Why wouldn’t they? Cable is cool— a short-haired time traveler with the power to create havoc and worthy of giving Deadpool and his band a hard time. However, despite astonishing and surprising cameos, Brolin’s cameo is out of the picture, so far anyway.
Now the question is, will Brolin return as Cable in Deadpool & Wolverine?
Josh Brolin Got Candid About Possibility Of His Deadpool & Wolverine Appearance
Josh Brolin’s Cable exited only in rumors when it comes to his appearance in the Shawn Levy-directed Deadpool & Wolverine starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. That too, evaporated over time as Marvel Studios dropped one teaser and the first trailer of the movie showcasing several Marvel characters in the mix but Cable was nowhere to be found. The Dune star is now on a promotional tour for the second season of his acclaimed Prime Video Western sci-fi show Outer Range and got candid about his Deadpool & Wolverine return in his recent appearance on the Bingeworthy TV podcast.
Brolin who played MCU’s Big Bad, Thanos in Infinity Saga responded to the host Mike DeAngelo’s query after informing that he is listed on the IMDB page of the movie. “Am I?” Brolin was quite surprised to hear that but soon shared his enthusiasm, “Yeeeesssss! I so wanted to be in that movie,” the actor laughed (via The Playlist).
“[Marvel] is a more complex labyrinth than ‘Outer Range’ will ever be, my friend. And I will never know where that went or what that is or what I’m involved with or what I’m not involved with —the MCU being involved now. Cable was a lot of fun. I really liked doing that role. That was a lot of fun.”
Of course, Brolin’s association with Marvel Studios was never up in smoke, he played the Mad Titan— MCU’s greatest weapon and worthy villain of the Avengers in the Infinity saga. Yet, it is quite hard for the actor to assume what the studio plans. Marvel certainly works in a mysterious way.
Josh Brolin Says He Is In Love With Hugh Jackman
Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine was perhaps the greatest early shocker from Deadpool & Wolverine, even before the title was not formed. Jackman’s Wolverine died in the 2017 movie Logan. It was a farewell but the resurrection of the character has altered the excitement among fans (although Marvel promised to let the Logan version of Wolverine rest in peace). Now, Brolin said that he is in love with Jackman for his prowess in playing the character at the age of 55. “Hugh [Jackman], I’m absolutely in love with,” Brolin said on the podcast.
“I know Ryan [Reynolds] now, and I’ve met Hugh a couple of times, and I think when he did ‘Logan’—forget it! I mean, Scott Frank, who wrote it, is a good friend of mine and I just think the coming together of [these characters] is just fantastic. And Hugh, I don’t know how old Hugh is now—is he 56, 57? I mean, seriously, the dude doesn’t age. So, yeah. I’m a big fan of his.”
Jackman certainly deserves appreciation for his commitment to the role he played for more than 23 years. For context, Jackman ate 8000 calories a day to get back to the shape of his character. In a previous interview with HBO Max’s Who’s Talking To Chris Wallace, the actor revealed that he trained for six months for the role.
“I’ve learned you can’t rush it. I’ve learned that it takes time. So we have six months from when I finish [The Music Man] to when I started filming. And I’m not doing any other work. I’m going to be with my family and train. That’s going to be my job for six months,” the Australian actor said (via GQ).
Surely, his hard work is well-reflected in the trailer of the movie as he flashed his jacked biceps.
Will Josh Brolin’s Cable Ever Return To The Deadpool Franchise?
Cable’s return to the franchise is not completely out of the picture although his Deadpool & Wolverine appearance appears to be slim to none. But director Levy previously stated that Deadpool & Wolverine is not a mere Deadpool sequel or Deadpool 3.
“As far as crafting the ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ story, I just felt privileged every day because you’re talking about two massive movie stars in their most iconic roles,” Levy told Screen Rant at 2024 CinemaCon.
“It also gave me an opportunity. It’s the third Deadpool movie, but it’s not ‘Deadpool 3.’ It’s a different thing that’s very much Deadpool and Wolverine. And it’s not trying to copycat anything from the first two movies. They were awesome, but this is a two-hander character adventure,” he added.
His statement has certainly created room for Cable’s return to the franchise if another installment will be on the card, and most likely will. Regardless, Brolin is happy with the grandness of the project and Jackman’s prowess in the movie.
Deadpool & Wolverine is slated for July 26 release.
