Hugh Jackman played Wolverine for nearly 24 years since his debut as Wolverine in Bryan Singer’s X-Men released in 2000. It was a breakthrough for the actor and he carried the legacy with utmost grace. Jackman almost hung up his boots as Wolverine after the 2017 movie Logan as the James Mangold movie killed off the character and it was a beautiful farewell. But thanks to Ryan Reynolds, the Australian star reprised his role in Deadpool & Wolverine. Now, Jackman regrets not doing one thing in previous appearances in the X-Men franchise.
Hugh Jackman’s Has A Big X-Men Regret
Hugh Jackman’s costume in the X-Men franchise was far from what was represented in the Marvel comics and the animated appearances of the character. However, in the upcoming MCU flick, Deadpool & Wolverine has brought back the comic-accurate iconic yellow costume of the character and with Marvel fans Jackman also felt the cool factor associated with it. “We almost did it in The Wolverine,” Jackman told Empire.
“But from the moment I put it on here, I was like, ‘How did we never do this?’ It looked so right, it felt so right. I was like, ‘That’s him.’ There are different sides of Wolverine we haven’t seen before in the movies. It was exciting for me.”
Previously, the director of Deadpool & Wolverine Shawn Levy revealed that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige insisted on the yellow and blue costume of the character after the director told him about Wolverine’s return.
“When we first told Kevin Feige that Hugh Jackman wanted to join the movie – my recollection is – damn near the first thing he said was, ‘Okay, but let’s go with the blue and yellow’…,” Levy told Jake’s Takes.
And then, the director added, “When I approached Hugh with that idea, he was like, ‘F-ck yeah!’”
Evidently, Jackman has been a fan of the classic yellow suit. Thankfully, the actor got to wear it after the revival of the character in the cinematic landscape.
How Ryan Reynolds Helped Getting Hugh Jackman Back As Wolverine?
To begin with, it was all accidental as Ryan Reynolds revealed in an interview with Collider. “I think you’re giving me too much credit I didn’t, I don’t I don’t believe that I’m responsible for Hugh coming back,” the actor said in the interview. However, he always wanted Jackman to come back.
“I always wanted you to come back. My first meeting with Kevin Feige when Disney bought Fox years ago maybe three years ago or three and a half four years ago, I’m not sure, uh, was about doing a movie with the two of us uh a a Deadpool-Wolverine movie um and that was not possible at the time um and then you know Hugh just happened to call at that perfect moment and expressed that he’d be interested in coming back,” he added.
The actor went on to add, “he expressed interest in coming back and then it was my job to take that to Kevin Feige one more time and sell it.” However, it was a hard sell, Reynolds admitted, “it’s not like adding Hugh Jackman to a movie like this is a hard sell it’s a it’s an immediate and emphatic unqualified yes uh it’s just it’s a lot of moving parts and you know Fox and X-Men and all that kind of stuff that uh uh that Marvel needs to sort through a lot of red tape in order to make that happen.”
We are glad that they did and so is Reynolds. “I’m really grateful that they did it because for me working with Hugh is a dream come true but working with Logan and having Logan and Wade together in a movie is beyond any dream I would ever be audacious enough to have so I’m really really super excited to do this uh film.”
Deadpool & Wolverine has been one of the most ambitious movies for Marvel Studios and the movie is going to be a banger with exciting cameos and violent action sequences.
Deadpool & Wolverine is slated for July 26 release.
