María Gabriela was spotted shooting a scene in a harness and leather outfit, sporting the same hairdo she had in the officially-released cast photo. Faría was cast in the role of The Engineer in November 2023, following her roles in Spanish-language films and TV shows. The character is part of DC Comics’ anti-hero group, The Authority, set to debut in a DCU film.

Along with The Engineer, Superman will feature other foes of the Last Son of Krypton, including Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) and Eve Teschmacher (Sara Sampaio). The film also sees notable superheroes such as Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), Guy Gardner/Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi).

Recently, Sara Sampaio was cast to play Lex’s assistant/lover Eve Teschmacher, and Skyler Gisondo has been cast as Jimmy Olsen. Milly Alcock’s Supergirl is also rumored to make her debut ahead of her own Woman of Tomorrow movie, but that’s yet to be confirmed.

The movie won’t delve too deeply into Superman’s origin story. It is one of multiple DCU projects entering production this year, marking the second release under Chapter One: Gods and Monsters after the upcoming Max series, Creature Commandos.

A Brief About the Character, The Engineer

The Engineer, created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, first appeared in The Authority #1 in 1999. Angela “Angie” Spica, born in Queens, New York, was a natural electronics prodigy who built circuit boards at a young age and earned multiple doctorates.

Angie and the Authority, originally from the Wildstorm Universe, were incorporated into the DC Universe after the 2011 Flashpoint event, with most members introduced through Stormwatch, a new organization that did not exist in the previously established reality. In the new DC Universe, the Engineer was forcibly modified into a mechanical body, making her a more reluctant hero and not the chosen successor of the original Engineer.

The Engineer has control over a nanite-enriched fluid, granting her tech-related abilities, including technopathy, which allows her to manipulate machines and computers with her mind, enabling her to hack advanced alien technology. nanites also give her near complete control over her own physiology.

She usually coats her skin with a layer of metal, which protects her from the natural environment and direct damage. This second skin is powerful enough to absorb the blast of an atomic bomb and can protect Angie from the resulting radiation. Angie can also shape-shift, stretching and elongating her limbs with ease.

The Engineer’s greatest power is her ability to transform her nanite blood into various forms, using trace elements in the air and soil around her. This allows her to create complex items beyond simply altering her hands into guns. The Engineer has accomplished many other impressive feats with her powers. She has created multiple exact duplicates of herself, whom she could communicate with telepathically. She can disassemble other machines on a molecular level with a touch. Her nanites also act as a memory bank, which allows her to access the knowledge of every book on Earth. Coupled with her genius-level intellect and natural creativity, there is little Angie Spica cannot do when she puts her mind to it.

Superman opens in theaters on July 11, 2025.
