“This book of drawings & descriptors becomes my film Bible, which is more important to me than the script. For me writing a script is often just me trying to describe what I see visually, so this is closer to the truth of how I see the story,” Gunn said (via ComicBook.Com).
With Superman, Gunn will explore the origin story of the titular DC character, his Kryptonian heritage and his growing up. But the movie will be a huge contrast from Zack Snyder’s portrayal of Superman with Henry Cavill.
James Gunn On His Hand Drawn Storyboards
Gunn has enjoyed a stunning career as a director. With his MCU trilogy, Guardians of the Galaxy, the director earned the attention of DC and was later appointed as the co-CEO of the superhero brand alongside Peter Safran. But his directorial heritage has kept him in the director’s chair. After the last installment of his MCU flick, the director is set to help his DCU project. Gunn’s vision of Superman, however, was much different than the previous portrayals of the character. After writing the story, the director jumped right on the storyboards.
“Every shot in my movies is hand drawn first. That’s at least 2,500 shots or so per my recent films. Many of the shows – about 1/3 – take anywhere from 2 to 10 cards or more – because I’m drawing the movement. So I probably end up with about 3,000 cards,” Gun told the outlet.
It must have been difficult but the passion can push a person to achieve insane height. He is very particular about the movement and arrangements of the shots and Gunn’s careful approach to filming his movie scenes adheres to the excitement among fans.
The movie also stars Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane. The cast includes Nathan Fillion as the Guy Gardner Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as the mass-shifting Metamorpho, and María Gabriela de Faría as The Authority’s The Engineer.
Superman is scheduled for 11 July 2025 release.
