Woody Allen, the four-time Oscar winner, who back in 2022 first announced his retirement from filmmaking and then took it back by saying that he never said so, (Via Variety) is considered one of the most divisive directors. The filmmaker in his recent interview said that he is “on the fence” of making more movies following release of his erotic thriller, Coup de chance.

Why Woody Allen Thinks That the “Romance of Filmmaking Is Gone?

His personal life might be controversial, but professionally Woody Allen gave us critically acclaimed movies like Annie Hall, Hannah and Her Sisters and Midnight in Paris and won four Oscars. In his long career, Allen has received a record-breaking 16 Oscar nominations for Best Screenplay. However, Allen now thinks that “all the romance of filmmaking is gone.”

In an interview with AirMail, he spoke about his latest film Coup de Chance, his 50th feature film. He said:

I’m on the fence about it. I don’t want to have to go out to raise money. I find that a pain in the neck. But if someone shows up and calls in and says we want to back the film, then I would seriously consider it. I would probably not have the willpower to say no, because I have so many ideas.” (Via THR

Allen continues:

It doesn’t matter to me whether I get distributed here or not. Once I make it, I don’t follow it anymore. Distribution is no longer what it was. Now distribution is two weeks in a cinema. The whole business has changed, and not in an appealing way. All the romance of filmmaking is gone […] Someone asked me about cancel culture, and I said, ‘If you’re going to be cancelled, this is the culture that you want to be cancelled from.’ Because who wants to be part of this culture?

Allen has been controversial from the #MeToo movement, when his adopted stepdaughter, Dylan Farrow brought allegations against him of s-xual abuse. He however denied this claim, but he saw subsequent decrease in his popularity in the film industry.

His way of minimal style filmmaking with dark humor comedy made him a reputed name in the industry. But it was the allegation against him of s-xual misconduct that brought his laurel down.

And, maybe that’s why, cinephiles are not taking his comment seriously.

Despite the majority criticizing him, it was Scarlett Johansson, who did three films together- collaborated on three films: Match Point, Scoop, and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, gave her support to him saying that she believes him and anyday she would like to again collaborate with him.

Coup de chance, which translates to stroke of luck in English, the erotic thriller has now been released in theaters as of April 5 and it will be dropped this Friday, April 12 on both digital and VOD platforms.
