Winona Ryder makes her comeback in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Tim Burton’s sequel to the hit 1988 horror comedy. She has earned a special place among the moviegoers with her spellbound performances. But recently she revealed that, due to excessive tabloid attention she lost out on one particular role that went to Titanic fame Kate Winslet.

In this never-settling world of cinema, casting choices often produce the most iconic performances while leaving behind tales of what might have been. One such tale is that of Winona Ryder, an actress whose career in the 1990s and into the early 2000s was as much about lost opportunities as it was about her many successes. Ryder recently let slip one surprising revelation: she was a serious contender for the part taken by Kate Winslet in the highly praised Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind movie.

Winona Ryder told Esquire about her meeting with the movie’s director, Michel Gondry. When Gondry met with Ryder, he was casting his 2004 sci-fi romance. Looking back on that meeting, Ryder recognizes now that her fame at the time was probably a bigger hindrance to certain roles than anything else. The actress says that “throughout the ’90s and even early 2000s, I lost a lot of parts” simply because her celebrity was a distraction within the movie itself. She said this was not because she felt this was a reflection of her own inadequacy but rather a recognition that she might detract from the story and the other actors.

When Ryder met with Gondry, she was finding herself in the surreal position of having paparazzi waiting outside the tiny restaurant where they met. She tried to reassure the director this order of scrutiny was not usual for her; Ryder could tell, however, that this additional “baggage” was a concern. “Trying to convince someone to ignore the noise around me was tough,” Ryder says.

It was such a brilliant script and we were at this little restaurant and people kept coming up to me and there was a random paparazzi guy outside, which was kind of unusual for me, but I just remember (Gondry’s) face, and trying to convince him that this isn’t normal, and I know it’s not normal,” she shared.

She could also see the trepidation in Gondry’s eyes-a reflection of the difficulties she’d been having in securing roles at the time.

There was baggage… Trying to convince someone to ignore the noise around me was tough. I saw it in their eyes. I lost a lot of parts because of that,” she continued. “I’m not in any way complaining. But there was this whole time when I felt like I would be a distraction, as well. I got it. Certainly, in the 1990s, I became aware of that.”

The role Ryder was supposed to consider eventually went to Kate Winslet. Winslet played the role of a woman who undergoes a procedure to erase her memories to forget her former lover, played by Jim Carrey, with wide acclaim, garnering her nominations for an Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe. This has been one of Winslet’s most iconic roles to date, but it would have been intriguing to see what Ryder might have brought to the character had she taken the part.

Ryder even admits that at one point in her career, association with particular genres of films made it hard for her to break out into other categories. Ryder, enjoyed a “great run” of films between 1988 and 1998, but by the early 2000s, she felt her career was at a crossroads.  The type of movies she was making were fewer and farther between, and her star power-let’s face it-was often a liability regarded as little more than a neat sideshow distraction.

Through all the highs and lows, Ryder’s career has survived. She is still a name to conjure with, and her recent credits include reprising the role that made her a household name in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice sequel, due to hit screens on September 6th. Her filmography, which also encompasses the likes of Heathers, Black Swan, The Age of Innocence, and Girl, Interrupted, reminds of her range and enduring potency.

Winona Ryder has recently shed light on her dramatic departure from Hollywood following a highly publicized shoplifting incident in the early 2000s. In the same interview with Esquire, the acclaimed actress discussed the profound impact this scandal had on her life and career.

The incident in question occurred in 2001 when Ryder was arrested for shoplifting at a California department store. Her legal troubles led to a conviction for grand theft and vandalism, resulting in a sentence that included three years of probation, a fine, and mandatory community service. This high-profile case not only captured the media’s attention but also had significant repercussions for Ryder’s public image.

Ryder reflected on how the scandal “had a giant effect” on both her personal life and professional trajectory. She remarked on the surreal nature of the incident, recalling, “It’s so funny, because there’s so much lore around that story, but it really couldn’t have been more of me thinking I’m going to my car to get something…

Despite her earlier openness about the event, Ryder provided new insights into her mindset during that tumultuous period. She revealed that the intense media scrutiny and public backlash led her to “check out” emotionally and professionally. In her words, “I think I just checked out,” and she further elaborated, “There was a period when I was not in season.

Ryder’s retreat from the limelight following the scandal highlights the often unseen emotional toll that public scrutiny can exert on celebrities. Her experience underscores the challenges faced by public figures dealing with personal crises under the relentless gaze of the media.

This period of withdrawal allowed Ryder time to reflect and regroup, eventually paving the way for her return to acting with renewed focus and perspective.
