Nobody can replace him as Tony Stark in the MCU. And Robert Downey Jr. was just the perfect choice for the role and he elevated MCU to a new height with his performance. The Oscar-winning actor first portrayed Tony Stark in the 2008 film, Iron Man. He went on to play the superhero in two more Iron Man films as well as three Avengers films between 2015 and 2019, Captain America: Civil War in 2016 and Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017. And in 2019, he left his role as Iron Man which became synonymous with the MCU.
In the meantime, there was talk regarding his return to the MCU. And now, the actor himself said that, even after winning an Academy Award, he would “happily” make a comeback to Marvel movies.

Robert Downey Jr. is an Oscar winner now. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer landed him his maiden Academy Award after previously being nominated twice. But, he is also keen to make a comeback to do a Marvel movie, something that gave him the focus among fans.
When it seemed like he has shut his doors for a superhero movies, in his recent interview with Esquire, the Iron Man actor said:
“It’s too integral a part of my DNA. That role chose me. And look, I always say, never, ever bet against [Marvel Studios head] Kevin Feige. It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.”
Alright, we get his point, but at this point there’s no point thinking about Iron Man’s future involvement as Kevin Feige last year said that there’s nothing much to hope for.
“We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again,” Feige told Vanity Fair. “We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way.”
Downey Jr. will be next seen in Apple TV’s The Sympathizer, where he’ll be seen in different roles starring alongside Hoa Xuande, Sandra Oh and more.

So, from Feige’s comment. It is certain that there’s no plan to resurrect Iron Man’s death. So, definitely they have to find some alternate option. And one of them could be having him play a Tony variant from the multiverse.
Much anticipated upcoming project Avengers: Secret Wars, which is going to be a soft reboot for the MCU, could be the last film where there’s a solid possibility to see Robert Downey Jr. in Marvel movies for one last time. And fans see this as the the potential move:

They'll bring him back for Secrets Wars, and then bring him back again as the main Iron Man when they reset the MCU after Secret Wars.
