Leonardo DiCaprio Becomes Meme Face Again at the 2026 Oscars

The Oscars took over Sunday night at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, bringing together the film industry’s biggest names to honour the best of cinema from 2025. Comedian Conan O’Brien returned as host and opened the ceremony with a lively monologue that quickly turned into one of the evening’s defining moments.
Leonardo DiCaprio sat among the nominees after earning a Best Actor nod for One Battle After Another. During the monologue, O’Brien turned his attention to the actor’s long history of viral reaction images. Film fans already recognise several of them. There is the laughing moment from Django Unchained, the pointing scene from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and the champagne toast from The Great Gatsby.

O’Brien decided to add a new one to the list. As the cameras cut to DiCaprio, a caption appeared on screen: “TFW (that feeling when) you didn’t agree to this.” The actor responded with an amused but slightly bewildered expression that immediately drew laughter from the audience.
O’Brien even spoke about the unpredictable nature of live television while describing his preparation for the ceremony. “We started working on this thing, you know, early January, late December, and people will write jokes that are really, like, ‘Oh, this is a great joke!’ And then you realize it’s 35 news cycles ago now.”
He added another candid thought about hosting live entertainment, “Now, there’s good gone wrong. And then there’s bad gone wrong. I don’t want bad gone wrong. I want good gone wrong. And so, you just have to see if that happens or not.”
That spontaneous DiCaprio reaction seemed to deliver exactly the kind of moment O’Brien hoped for.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s One Battle After Another Wins Best Picture

While the viral moment captured social media attention, the ceremony also strengthened DiCaprio’s remarkable place in modern film history. One Battle After Another claimed the top prize of the night, marking another Best Picture winner connected to the actor’s career.

With the victory, DiCaprio joined an extremely small group of performers who have led three Best Picture winners. His earlier films Titanic and The Departed, already belonged to that elite category. Only two other actors share the same distinction in leading roles: Clark Gable and Dustin Hoffman.
His broader record within the Academy Awards landscape also stands out. The actor earned his first Oscar for The Revenant a decade earlier and has collected multiple nominations across his career. He also shares a notable statistic with Robert De Niro, appearing in twelve Best Picture nominees, the highest number among living actors.
That pattern reflects a consistent ability to choose ambitious projects and work with acclaimed filmmakers. At 51, DiCaprio continues to build a filmography that balances artistic ambition with cultural impact.
