The Avengers may be superheroes on screen, but their bond extends far beyond the cameras. Jeremy Renner, who portrays Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently opened up about the genuine friendships he shares with his co-stars.

In an interview with Men’s Health, Renner discussed the deep connections he shares with his Avengers co-stars. Following a near-fatal snowplow accident in January 2023, Renner experienced firsthand the support and solidarity from his fellow actors. They were thrilled to see him fully recovered at Chris Evans’ wedding in September. Renner shared how these experiences have strengthened their bond.

It’s a real thing — it’s not just for Instagram. We hate that stuff,” Renner said of their friendship, after recounting his snowplow accident.

Renner further emphasizes the authenticity of their bond. “We have a family chat and have for a long time. When you work with people — look, we all went through a culturally significant experience together. And there’s divorces and marriages and babies; a lot of stuff happened in these 12 years.

Renner highlighted that Anthony Mackie visited him shortly after the accident, along with Paul Rudd and Sam Rockwell. Robert Downey Jr. frequently checked in via FaceTime, while Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans also spoke about their visits in the months following his injuries.

Renner remarked on their camaraderie, “In the films, we look like we’re at a costume party, and there’s ridiculous props and we’re doing these ridiculous things, but it’s also beautiful because we’re all connected. There’s a brotherhood or sisterhood or whatever the heck you want to call it. I just call it love.

He added, “I love every one of them. I’d rather go to jail with Downey than go do something amazing by myself. I’d rather get in a car crash with Evans.”

Renner, who first portrayed Hawkeye in 2011’s Thor, reprised the role in The Avengers, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Avengers: Endgame. He also starred in the Disney+ series Hawkeye

Renner also shared the support he received from his fellow Avengers during his recovery. “All those guys come to my bedside, and they’ve been with me all along through this recovery, so… if they want me, they could have me,” he added. “It would be something.”

In addition to his potential Marvel return, Renner resumed work in January for the production of the third season of his new series, Mayor of Kingstown. The second season of the show premiered on Paramount+ just weeks before his accident.

Beyond the MCU, Renner is acclaimed for his performances in The Hurt Locker and The Town, both earning him Academy Award nominations. He will be part of the ensemble cast for the next Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man, set for release in 2025.
