- Eric Dane died at 53, less than a year after publicly revealing his battle with ALS.
- His family said he spent his final days surrounded by loved ones and advocating for ALS awareness.
Eric Dane’s final year now grabs headlines as a quiet act of loyalty from his estranged wife, Rebecca Gayheart, proves that family is what matters most, especially when someone is in pain. After his diagnosis with motor neurone disease, Gayheart withdrew her long-standing divorce petition and chose to stand beside him for the sake of their daughters. When Dane died at 53, he was surrounded by family.
The actor, known for commanding roles on prime-time television, including Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, revealed his ALS diagnosis in April 2025. Within a year, the disease had progressed. Yet in that time, he worked, spoke openly about his symptoms, and leaned on those closest to him.
Eric Dane’s Wife Rebecca Gayheart Withdrew Divorce Filing After His ALS Diagnosis

Rebecca Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018 after 13 years of marriage. The couple had built a life together since their 2004 wedding and were raising two daughters, Billie and Georgia. For seven years, the case remained open while they lived apart. In March 2025, Gayheart formally withdrew the filing. Weeks later, Dane disclosed his diagnosis.
Speaking on the Broad Ideas podcast last November, Gayheart explained why she stepped back from the legal process. She wanted her daughters, now teenagers, to understand loyalty within family. “We tell them, ‘We show up for people no matter what. He is our family. He is your father,’” Gayheart shared. She said her focus remained on ensuring the girls felt “taken care of” even though “things are hard and sad and bad.”
In a personal essay, she described their bond, their “love may not be romantic, but it’s a familial love.” They had not lived under the same roof for eight years, and both had relationships with other people.
Even so, they gathered for meals and spent time together. “This year, the girls and I have spent a lot of time at Eric’s house, which is about a 12-minute drive away from our home,” she wrote.
“We have a lot of meals together. We do a lot of drop-by visits — well, I don’t just drop by. I always call and say, ‘I’m coming up the hill’ or ‘I’m dropping Georgia off.’”
She admitted the dynamic felt “super complicated” and wondered aloud if she was handling it “the wrong way or right way.” “I’m just showing up and trying to be there for [my kids]. I guess time will tell,” she said.
Eric Dane Passes Away At 53, One Year After ALS Diagnosis

Eric Dane died on 19 February, less than a year after making his illness public. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive condition that attacks motor neurons, gradually stealing muscle control. There is no cure.
Dane spoke candidly about the toll in a 2025 interview. “I’m angry because, you know, my father was taken from me when I was young, and now, you know, there’s a very good chance I’m going to be taken from my girls while they’re very young.” Later, he raised funds, joined advocacy boards, and told a national publication, “I’m trying to save my life,” adding that if his actions could move research forward, he would feel satisfied.
On set and off, colleagues remembered his warmth. He had built a career from guest roles in the 1990s to cultural touchstones on Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria. Fans knew him as Dr Mark Sloan and as Cal Jacobs, a character layered with quiet menace and pain.
