Sydney Sweeney Throws Her Hat in the Barbie Bin, Says She’d Love to Play Barbie’s Sister After Baskin-Robbins Ad

Sydney Sweeney’s latest project with Baskin-Robbins was a personal passion turned into a menu. Launched July 1 nationwide, the Sweet on Sydney Menu features her self-declared go-to treat, now dubbed Sydney’s Signature Scoop: Rainbow Sherbet in a chocolate-dipped waffle cone, topped with rainbow sprinkles and gummi bear minis. Accompanying it is Sydney’s Signature Fizz, a citrusy soda blend with the same nostalgic flavor and topped with gummi bears, served in a limited-edition color-changing cup.

The playful commercial for the collab shows her persistently visiting her local Baskin-Robbins for the same order, leading to the brand officially adding her favorites to the summer menu.
While the campaign is full of bright Y2K energy, one moment stood out when the actress was asked if she’d ever join a Barbie sequel. “I’d have to read a script, but I’m a huge, huge fan of Margot [Robbie], so I would not be opposed to it,” Sweeney told Bustle. When the idea of playing Barbie’s sister came up, she lit up, replying: “Me too.”

Barbie fans can certainly imagine Sweeney in a matching pink palette, and her Baskin-Robbins commercial tapping into that same retro-pop charm.
Is Barbie 2 Really Happening? What We Know About Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s Sequel Idea

After Margot Robbie’s Barbie painted the world pink and pulled in over $1.4 billion at the box office, the next logical question was, will there be a sequel? The film became a pop culture juggernaut, earning critical acclaim, eight Oscar nominations, and even a win for Best Original Song. Warner Bros. and Mattel seemed ready, but the real decision-makers are still Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach.
The duo, who co-wrote the first Barbie script and earned an Oscar nod for it, have always maintained that a follow-up would only happen if the story made sense. In March 2024, Gerwig said during her Time’s Women of the Year speech, “My North Star is, what do I deeply love? What do I really care about? What’s the story underneath this story?” She clarified that unless there’s a deeper emotional pull, she won’t move forward. That hasn’t stopped rumors, though, especially after The Hollywood Reporter claimed the pair had pitched a sequel idea to Warner Bros.
According to the report published on December 13, Gerwig and Baumbach had found that “undertow” Gerwig spoke about and brought their pitch to the studio. A source even said it opened the door to deal talks. However, Warner Bros. quickly denied it. As of now, Barbie 2 hasn’t been officially confirmed or greenlit.
One major reason for the delay? Busy schedules. Baumbach is deep in post-production on his next Netflix film, featuring a stacked cast including George Clooney, Adam Sandler, and Gerwig herself. Meanwhile, Gerwig is prepping her adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia. With those big commitments, even if a Barbie sequel is in the works, it likely won’t hit screens before 2027 or later.
Sydney Sweeney has shown her interest in the potential sequel, and it has already created a swift buzz among fans. Now, only time will tell if the mega project gets a go-ahead from the studio anytime soon.
