Da’Vine Joy Randolph took home her first ever Academy Award after beating Emily Blunt from Oppenheimer, Danielle Brooks from The Color Purple, America Ferrera in Barbie and Jodie Foster from Nyad. 

The Only Murders in the Building star, played the role of Mary Lamb, a grieving mother in the Alexander Payne-directed film The Holdovers which also stars Paul Giamatti.

For her role in The Holdovers, Da’Vine Joy Randolph has won best supporting actress at the Oscars 2024. The award was given by five of the category’s previous winners: Regina King, Jamie Lee Curtis, Rita Moreno, Lupita Nyong’o and Mary Steenburgen.

Starting her speech with a tearful eye, Randolph said: “God is so good.” 

“I didn’t think I was supposed to be doing this as a career,” she said. “I started off as a singer. And my mother said to me, ‘Go across that street to that theatre department. There’s something for you there.’ And I thank my mother for doing that.”

She continued, “I thank you to all the people who have stepped in my path and been there for me, who have ushered me and guided me. I am so grateful to all you beautiful people out here. For so long, I’ve always wanted to be different, and now I realize I just need to be myself.”

She concluded, “I pray to God that I get to do this more than once. I thank you for seeing me. Have a blessed night. Thank you.”

With the Oscar now in hand, she swept all the major awards this season including Golden Globes, Critics Choice, BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild. 

She gained attention for her role as Oda Mae Brown in the 2012 theatrical production of Ghost, adapted from the 1990 film starring Whoopi Goldberg. Goldberg also won the Best Actress in a Supporting Role Oscar award for playing the same character.

Meanwhile, Emma Stone won the Best Actress award for her performance in Poor Things, beating another deserving contender Lily Gladstone.
