Deadpool & Wolverine was the first R-rated MCU film and truly, as it set a unique record within the franchise. The Hollywood Reporter states that in the film’s 127 minutes, Deadpool and Wolverine drop 118 F-bombs. The New York Post reported 116 uses of the word. In any case, it’s a franchise record considering that the second film only had 90.
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has typically maintained a PG-13 rating, the recent release of Deadpool & Wolverine marks a significant departure. The film’s R-rating has allowed for a level of language previously unseen within the franchise. Interestingly, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 holds the distinction of being the first MCU film to employ a particular expletive, though its PG-13 rating limited its usage. Martin Scorsese‘s The Wolf of Wall Street starring Leonardo DiCaprio has earned a dubious distinction: it holds the record for the most instances of a particular expletive in a non-documentary film. With a staggering 506 occurrences, the film significantly surpasses the previous record held by Spike Lee’s Summer of Sam. Scorsese, known for his extended runtimes, once again utilizes a near three-hour canvas to unleash a torrent of profanity, outdoing even his own previous work, Casino.
For those with a keen interest in the details, Gilbert Cruz from Vulture meticulously counted the number of F-bombs dropped and categorized their variations. The terms “f-ck” and “f-cking” are used 169 and 358 times respectively by DiCaprio and the cast. The word “f-cked” appears 16 times, while “motherf-cker” is used 18 times. The less common but humorous “f-cksville” is heard in four instances. Additionally, terms like “f-ckface,” “f-ckheads,” “f-ckers,” and “f-ckity” are each mentioned once.

The film chronicles the outrageous exploits of Jordan Belfort, a Wall Street figure whose life is defined by excess and debauchery. Despite this, it remains a standout in Scorsese’s filmography. While it’s tempting to equate a higher profanity count with a superior film, such a correlation is not universally applicable. However, in the case of The Wolf of Wall Street, the profanity undeniably aligns with the film’s over-the-top nature.
