Marvel Studios has unveiled a lot of details for their upcoming slates including Anthony Mackie’s Captain America: Brave New World, Harrison Ford’s Thunderbolts*, multi-starrer Fantastic Four, and so on. The studio’s new revelation about Avengers 5, however, invited fans’ attention to a grand level, primarily with Robert Downey Jr’s return to the MCU with a new character after Avengers: Endgame.
Marvel Studios Reveals Avengers 5 Title
Marvel Studios has finally shifted the gear from the Kang narrative to a brand new storyline after Kang actor Jonathan Majors’ dismissal from the studios. Avengers 5, previously titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty was well well-established within the cinematic universe. After his departure, several rumors surfaced including casting a new actor for Kang.
While bringing Doctor Doom into the picture as the new Big Bad of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, primarily for the two of the upcoming Avengers movies was also under the radar of speculations among fans, the sudden shift of plan is quite surprising. Now, it is fair to assume that the larger Kang narrative in the MCU is seemingly buried for now.
After making a smashing record for the highest-grossing franchise of all time with $30 billion, Marvel Studios Boss Kevin Feige alongside cast and directors of upcoming slates joined San Diego Comic-Con for several big reveals including the introduction to the title of the upcoming Avenger movie, now titled as Avengers: Doomsday.
Robert Downey Jr Returns To MCU For A Different Role
Robert Downey Jr had a stunning run in the MCU as Tony Stark aka Iron Man for close to 16 years. The actor is among the stars who witnessed the foundation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his first Iron Man movie that came out in 2008 with Jon Favreau in the director’s chair.
Downey’s Iron Man tenure under the leading Superhero Brand ended with Avengers: Endgame where Downey’s character sacrificed himself to save the universe. Certainly, it was one of the most tragic deaths of a character under the banner of Marvel Studios but it has been five years since the end of Endgame. Now, Downey has another pair of big shoes to fill after his glorious Iron Man tenure. The actor who claimed an Oscar recently for his outstanding performance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is set to appear as Victor von Doom aka Doctor Doom in his second term in the studio.

Again, surprising fans at SDCC, the actor made an appearance to address his new character, without revealing any grave detail, Downey said, “New mask, same task. What can I tell you, I hate playing complicated characters” (via Discussing Film).
Additionally, reports of Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, commonly known as the Russo Brothers directing the two slated Avengers movies — Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars came to be true as the Endgame directors duo, who delivered several blockbusters for the studio are set to return to helm the highly anticipated projects. Weighing on Downey’s return, The Russo Brothers stated that the greatest “actor in the world to play that character. We give you the one person who can play Victor Von Doom.”
Marvel also unveiled a new Avengers: Doomsday logo.
Avengers: Doomsday is slated for May 2026 release.
