Fans may have wondered the reason behind the delay of Charlize Theron’s fantasy action movie The Old Guard 2. The first installment of the movie series debuted on Netflix in 2020. The movie ended in a huge cliffhanger and teased the obvious sequel. Now, Theron has an update on the upcoming sequel as she explains the reason behind the delay.

The Old Guard 2 was always a planned project as the first movie left a lot of room for Veronica Ngô’s character Quynh’s potential development who has been trapped underwater somewhere unknown and untraceable for the last 500 years buried in an underwater cage. She was a friend of Charlize Theron’s Andy/Andromache of Scythia who fought alongside countless battles in ancient times until they were separated.

The filming of The Old Guard 2 was wrapped two years ago and the movie has been in the post-production hell ever since without a release date. However, in a recent interview with Variety, Theron gave us a positive update on the movie promising that the movie will be released soon. “Netflix went through quite a changeover,” the Oscar winner said of the movie addressing, the delay was due to the change in leadership in Netflix.

“We got kind of stuck in that and our post-production shut down, I think, five weeks into it,” the actor added. There is no shred of doubt that the dual strikes in Hollywood had an impact on the delay of the movie as well but Theron has always been hopeful about the project seeing the light of day.

The delay of the superhero movie is surprising considering the first installment claiming a stunning 72 million viewers in its first four weeks of its debut on the streamer. Explaining the reason behind the delay, Theron said that the movie has undergone several changes. “They were going through a lot of changes, and I totally understand it,” she said while assuring fans that “We finally picked it back up and I’m really excited about it.”

Gina Prince-Bythewood directed and based on Greg Rucka’s graphic novel of the same name coming from the screenplay of the same author, The Old Guard’s cinematic adaptation was also a critical darling standing at an 80% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Victoria Mahoney will helm the upcoming sequel with the returning cast including Theron, Layne, Schoenaerts, Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Uma Thurman and Henry Golding have also joined the cast, however, their roles have not been disclosed yet.

Theron also revealed that the movie is “really good,” adding,  “It’s a really important film to us. I only wanted to do it if we could make it amazing. I really love this movie.”

Previously, the producer of The Old Guard teased that the franchise could heading to be a trilogy but it’s fair to assume that we have to wait for the release of the second installment before Netflix announces a third movie in the franchise.
