Fans are seemingly not very interested in David Fincher’s plans to remake Squid Game for the English-speaking audience. The director currently has a very good relationship with Netflix and the remake could be another wild hit but can it topple one of the most viewed original series?
David Fincher Is Reportedly Re-making Squid Game’s American Version
Are we seriously getting the American version of Squid Game? Many reports including The Playlist, it is being said that David Fincher has been involved in the Squid Game remake project for over two years, as stated. The original series, which became a global sensation in 2021, prompted Netflix to swiftly initiate plans for a remake.
Fincher, already juggling a Chinatown prequel series, added the Squid Game remake to his potential projects list. Robert Towne, renowned for writing films such as Chinatown, The Firm, and Days of Thunder, collaborated with Fincher on the miniseries. Towne has confirmed that all episodes are written and ready for production. This project was intended to follow Fincher’s 2023 release, The Killer.
Despite Netflix’s silence on the Squid Game remake, it is believed that the project remains active. Dennis Kelly, a British writer known for series like Utopia and The Third Day, has reportedly been working on the script for some time. Previously, Fincher and Kelly collaborated on an outline for an American version of Utopia for HBO, but that project never came to fruition.
The current status of the Squid Game remake is uncertain, but it could be Fincher’s next directorial venture, given that he has stepped back from the Chinatown prequel, which already has all its episodes written.
But, Fans Don’t Want It
Is it necessary? That is what fans have been asking after the reported news. Earlier this year, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos dismissed the rumors of a Squid Game remake. Given the impending release of Squid Game‘s second season, there is little incentive for the streaming giant to produce an English-language version, even if David Fincher were to direct it.
The first season remains Netflix’s most-watched show, with over 2.2 billion hours viewed globally. Should the idea of a remake progress, it is likely to be a companion series featuring new characters navigating a U.S. chapter of the game, rather than a direct remake.

While a U.S. version of Squid Game is not currently planned, Netflix has introduced Squid Game: The Challenge. This reality series features 456 contestants vying for a $4.56 million prize through challenges inspired by the original show, but without the fatal consequences. The popularity of this series has led to its renewal for a second season.
Lee Jung-jae, the star of Squid Game, confirmed that the second season will premiere on Netflix this December. As for David Fincher, fans are left wondering whether they would prefer him to work on a Squid Game project or embark on a different venture entirely.
