Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two won everyone and everything. Be it critical applause, be it box office. Villeneuve who has already discussed the next installment of the franchise is however not happy for one reason. Recently, he was honored with the Academy Icon Award at the Canadian Screen Awards, as per Yahoo and while giving his acceptance speech, he shed light on his disappointment.

Because; Denis Villeneuve wants more cinema to do well just like his recent success did. Yes, he has advocated as a whole for cinema’s success. He is unhappy as even after five months passed in 2024, still, it is Dune: Part Two which is dominating the global box office. He is being both humble and a little disappointed here.

The second installment in the sci-fi franchise starring Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet was released on March 1 this year, the movie has grossed more than $711 million worldwide. It remains the top-grossing movie of 2024, ahead of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire which has earned $567M so far.

While in Toronto to receive the Academy Icon Award at the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards, the director said he was “disappointed to still be number one. … I hope soon that there will be other successes at the box office. I hope, sooner or later, that this summer box office will be much better.

SUGGESTED: Denis Villeneuve is ‘very excited’ About ‘Dune 3’

Villeneuve emphasized the importance of creating movies that leverage the immersive power of the theatrical experience. “I think we need movies that are theatrical experiences, that will fully embrace the power of the theatre, and I’m not just talking about Dune 2. Of course I’m talking about many movies,” he said. Highlighting the film Civil War as an example, he noted, “A movie like Civil War, for instance, is a strong example of a movie that absolutely used the power of the theatre.” (Via Deadline)

Reflecting on his own film’s reception, Villeneuve expressed his gratitude. “I was lucky that Part 2 did reach the audience, I wish it would happen more often, honestly,” he remarked, hoping for a future where more films achieve similar success.

Fans Think Deadpool & Wolverine Will Surpass Dune 2 Success

Villeneuve made these remarks following a lackluster opening weekend for summer movie releases, in which Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga underperformed compared to expectations. Many observed that big-time attendance at theaters hasn’t occurred since Dune: Part 2 was released. This year, the box office has collapsed; for instance, this weekend’s totals are 66% lower than they were a year ago.

But, the upcoming MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine by Shawn Levy where we would see Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman team up, according to fans would go past Denis Villeneuve’s Dune 2 success.

Given the hype and anticipation of audiences, the box office can predict a storm when Deadpool & Wolverine releases. It has already broken a pre-sales record for R-rated movies at AMC. First-day box office presales for Deadpool & Wolverine are already $8 million. Considering all these trends, we could probably see Villeneuve happy about and pleased as far as box office collection is concerned.

Deadpool & Wolverine will hit the theaters on July 26.
