Pirates of the Caribbean was one of Disney’s treasure trove franchises with Johnny Depp as the titular Captain Jack Sparrow. Nearly seven years have passed since the franchise’s last movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and then the movie series kind of went rogue. After a long wait, fans have finally got an update.

In the long gap of seven years, several reports of Pirates of the Caribbean emerged with a glimmering hope of the continuation of the franchise. However, nothing seemed getting closer to fruition for Johnny Depp’s hit franchise until now. In a chat with Comicbook.com legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer hinted at Disney’s new plan for the franchise. “It’s hard to tell. You don’t know, you really don’t know,” Bruckheimer said of Pirates of the Caribbean.

“You don’t know how they come together. You just don’t know. Because with Top Gun you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can’t tell you. But we’re gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.”

Of course, a reboot makes sense as the original franchise has lived its time with grace grossing close to $4.5 billion at the global box office. Previously, Barbie star Margot Robbie’s female-led Pirates of the Caribbean was on the card.

Considering the plan for rebooting the franchise, Robbie leading a new franchise could be a possibility. Also, the actor has proved her prowess as a lead in Greta Gerwig’s 2023 blockbuster Barbie which became the highest grosser of the year collecting over $1.4 billion at the global box office. While reports of Disney not wanting to make a female-led movie (per Variety) surfaced, Bruckheimer previously told Collider that it is not entirely beyond possibility.

“I think that that script will come forward at a certain point. We developed two different stories for ‘Pirates’ and the other one’s going forward first, so that’s what we’re working on, to try to get that one made.”

Speaking of Robbie’s Pirate of the Caribbean project, Bruckheimer also had a chat with The Sunday Times. “Yes. We’re talking to Margot Robbie,” he told the outlet hinting at the development of the project. “We are developing two ‘Pirates’ scripts — one with her, one without,” he added. When asked about Depp, he said that it was “not at this point. The future is yet to be decided.”

It appears that Disney will reboot the franchise but will be careful in their approach, while Depp could be in a cameo in one or more movies if the reboot pans out.
