What's Inside?
- Leonardo DiCaprio’s Oscars moustache was for his role in 'What Happens at Night,' directed by Martin Scorsese.

- DiCaprio says he will never direct, citing deep admiration for Scorsese’s filmmaking craft.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s unexpected mustache at the 2026 Oscars sparked instant curiosity, setting off a wave of speculation across social media and red carpets alike. The answer, however, ties directly to his latest collaboration with Martin Scorsese, a project already generating quiet buzz within the industry. At first glance, it seemed like a casual style choice, but it turned out to be a deliberate nod to his character.
The reveal arrived alongside the first glimpse of What Happens at Night, a psychological drama that reunites DiCaprio with Jennifer Lawrence. The film’s early imagery and premise hint at a layered, unsettling narrative.
Why Did Leonardo DiCaprio Sport A Mustache At The Oscars?

The mustache was not a fashion gamble. It belonged to Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in What Happens at Night, marking his return to a brooding, psychologically complex space under Martin Scorsese’s direction. The film appears to echo the tone of earlier collaborations that thrived on unease and introspection.
A first-look image, shared by both DiCaprio and Scorsese, shows him alongside Jennifer Lawrence as a married couple walking through a stark, wintry landscape. The visual feels cold and distant, suggesting a relationship under strain. Supporting performances from Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson and Jared Harris further signal a film rooted in strong character work.
Adapted from Peter Cameron’s novel, the story follows an American couple travelling to a small European town to adopt a baby. The setting grows increasingly disorienting, with the narrative exploring identity, trust and perception. As the synopsis of the movie reads: “Nothing is as it seems in this baffling, frozen world, and the more the couple struggles to claim their baby, the less they seem to know about their marriage, themselves and life itself.”
Leonardo DiCaprio Explains Martin Scorsese’s Creative Process

The project marks another high-profile reunion. DiCaprio and Lawrence previously shared the screen in Don’t Look Up, yet this film places them in a far more intimate and tense dynamic. It also represents Lawrence’s first time working with Scorsese.
During a conversation, DiCaprio offered her insight into Scorsese’s distinctive process. “It’s a great thing, and he’s going to give you a lot of film references,” he told Lawrence during their appearance on Variety’s Actors on Actors.
“They usually come in the form of a DVD. And if you don’t have a DVD player, get one… he’ll have screenings sometimes for just one sequence in a movie. If there’s something that he wants you to capture from an old film or the pacing of something, you might have a screening of a whole film just for a specific scene that he wants to see. We might see some Japanese ghost films for reference, just to get the tone of it. You’re going to have an amazing time.”
Produced under multiple banners, including Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions and DiCaprio’s Appian Way, the film continues their long-standing creative partnership.
Leonardo DiCaprio Reveals Why He Will Never Direct A Movie

Sony Pictures
While DiCaprio continues to evolve as an actor and producer, he remains firm about one thing: directing does not appeal to him. His reasoning reflects both humility and a deep respect for the craft shaped by his collaborators.
“Some people have asked me if I wanted to direct,” DiCaprio said.
“I’m like, ‘I would never want to direct.’ I could never do anything close to what Martin Scorsese does. Why would I do that?”
His perspective stems from years of working closely with filmmakers known for their precision and vision. He once admitted feeling almost “cursed” by the standard set around him, recognising the immense responsibility that comes with directing. Even so, he carries one small regret. “I’ve been so focused on what I’ve been doing [laughs] as an actor; you make these decisions, you play these characters, you try to get into the depth of their soul as much as you possibly can,” he explained. “I would have loved to be much more of a voyeur, to watch what you do behind the camera.”
What Happens at Night does not have a confirmed release date as of yet.
