Actor Rainn Wilson has never shied away from honesty, but his latest reflection struck a deeper chord with fans who grew up watching The Office. Speaking at FAN EXPO San Francisco 2025, Wilson looked back on his iconic run as Dwight Schrute with pride, gratitude, and a surprising sense of longing. The beloved NBC sitcom changed his life, yet it also taught him a quiet lesson about success and presence. What he shared was not regret rooted in failure, but a mature realization about time, ambition, and how easily joy can slip by unnoticed, even during the most rewarding chapters of a career.

Appearing alongside his longtime co-star Angela Kinsey, who portrayed Angela Martin, Wilson admitted that he sometimes wishes he had slowed down and absorbed the experience more fully. The set of The Office was joyful, creative, and rare, yet success brought its own pressure. Wilson revealed that this feeling was not his alone. Fellow castmates Ed Helms and B.J. Novak shared similar reflections about those years.
“It’s something that I’ve shared with a number of Office members. Ed Helms was one I spoke to about this and B.J. Novak I spoke to about it, that one of our regrets is that we didn’t enjoy it more,” said Wilson during the interview.
He was quick to clarify that the cast loved making the show. Laughter was real. The bonds were strong. Still, when opportunity finally arrives after years of struggle, it can create a restless urge to chase more. For Wilson, that hunger came from a familiar place many actors know well.
“You work so hard as an actor and you’re broke forever and you’re getting little roles and then all of a sudden like when your break hits, you want to make the most of it,” said the actor during the FAN EXPO panel. “So, you know, all of a sudden I had opportunities to, you know, star in movies and develop other TV shows and get production deals and do commercial campaigns. And sometimes you could be so focused on these other aspects of your career that like the greatest job that you’ll ever have is in your lap, and you kind of neglect just really savoring how special and rich that experience is.”
Rainn Wilson Reflects on Success, Happiness, and Lessons Learned after The Office

Wilson widened the lens beyond Hollywood. He described this habit of always looking ahead as a shared human struggle, not a celebrity problem. His words landed softly, yet firmly, with the audience.
“I think maybe this is something that we can all experience. You know, sometimes high school is your best time of your life,” said Wilson to the FAN EXPO audience. “Sometimes it’s college. Sometimes it’s a work experience or a vacation, but you’re thinking about what’s the next thing. So, it’s kind of a trap of how happiness works.”
Wilson portrayed Dwight Schrute across all nine seasons of The Office, which concluded in 2013. Since then, he has built an impressive body of work, including roles in Star Trek: Discovery, Mom, and Lessons in Chemistry, according to IMDb. Yet his message remains clear. Success matters, but presence matters more. Sometimes, the best moment is already happening, quietly waiting to be noticed.
